I've learned that 「ぢ」 and 「じ」 are both written and pronounced as "ji", so how do you know which you need to use?

In modern kana usage, ぢ is used only for rendaku in the compound words(e.g. 鼻血[はなぢ], 身近[みぢか]), and 縮[ちぢ]む. This rule is quite the same to ず vs づ, as in 三日月[みかづき], 続[つづ]く.
