Poll: Majority of Japanese opposed to PM's Yasukuni visits

JREF users are in line with the majority of japanese. A recent poll shows that 54% of japanese are against the PM visiting the Yasukuni shrine. According to Mainichi Daily News the public have become opposed to the visits due to the recent revelations that the previous Emperor (Showa) had very strong - but so far pivate - views about the inclusion of the 14 Class-A war criminals: " ...the significant increase in negative opinions of pollees is the recent revelation that Emperor Showa stopped visiting the shrine because he was displeased at the enshrinement of Class-A war criminals there." I would love to see Chinese and Koreans screaming "Koizumi's visit is unforgivable because it is against the will of dear greatest former emperor Showa!"

Though there are more than half of japanese opposed to PM's Yasukuni visits,
I think koizumi will likely still visit Yasukuni. Perhaps it will visit it on Aug 15th or maybe before or after Aug 15th.

Don't flatter yourself,average Chinese don't give a damn about it or discuss it.

It's just a news piece media outlets report it like any other news.

It's also over-stretch for Japanese to think Chinese live 24/7 hating them,the truth is average Chinese don't think about Japan or Japanese.

The one million dollar question is,do traditionally conformist Japanese influence politics in Japan ?

Japan often presents itself as superficial modern democracy,but limping like a " 4th WORLD handicap " in terms of democractic practices.

I do not think that anyone cares much what Koizumi is dooing anymore. He will be stepping down in September and is allready a "has been". Recently he embarrased hinself by going to the home of Elvis together with Bush - Imagine that the two leaders of the two biggest economies spends their time dooing such a piontless thing! While the world has numerous important problems - they merely fool around in Graceland.

Koizumi will no doubt go to Yasukuni the 15th August again, but it will be one of his last acts as PM - he is allready history.

The important question is if the next PM will go. So far (the favorite PM candidate) Abe seems decided not to go there the 15th August.

Just about any poll can be read in any way shape or form. It all depends on the questioner and the results that the pollster is looking for.

This biggest thing to think about is whether or not you believe in everything you read in print media or see on TV.

I doubt that. This poll is by the Mainichi Shimbun, however the Asahi Shimbun did the same poll just 15 months ago (see thread) and at that time 48% of Japanese said Koizumi should refrain from visiting Yasukuni. I think that a slight progression (up 6%) is normal after a year as the situation hasn't improved and more Japanese become aware of the problem.

it is a just politics before electing a New PM.
ppl dosent want a new pm to go to yasukuni that is propaganda of media.

What is your purpose in trying so hard to show that more than 50% of the Japanese approve of the PM's visit to Yasukuni ? To many non-Japanese your attitude reflects a sort of nationalist denial of Japan's wartime responsibilities, and a certain pride in making your neighbours agnry in all impunity. :erm:

Abe was defending Koizumi for giong to the Yasukuni shrine, and I think he still is, and he will probably be the new PM

I can understand that the Japanese want to mourn their death at the Yasukuni Shrine, but indeed without the war criminals. I can also understand that the families of the war criminals want to mourn their death too, but as 50% of the Japanese says, then that must be done outside of the Yasukuni Shrine. And maybe many more Japanese than we know agree with such idea.

Hahahaha! Sometimes you show brilliant flashes of wisdom, caster51. In America we have an old saying:

"There are lies, there are damn lies, and there are statistics."

Nevertheless, a substantial proportion of the population seems to be against the Prime Minister visiting the shrine. Honestly, I see this as a positive thing. A subtle and indirect damnatio memoriae by the Showa Emperor should mean something to people.

Today, Yomiuri , one of the 4 major news paper in Japan, reported that 50% of respondant to Yomiuri poll, against Prime Minister Koizumi going to Yasukuni, and 40% of them support for it. But last month, 42% of them were against, and 46% of them were support.

Anyway, the Japanese people is split in almost half, and swing between against and support.

I support for it, but it is very personal matter to go to Shrine or not, so it is just up to his prefarence at all. No one should say go or not go.
