I'm not sure I'm putting this in the right section however I have a serious issue I need help with.
Okay, I live in the USA and I am a foriegn movie geek and have currently two foriegn import DVDs. They are both Region 3 NTSC but will play in my DVD players (Sony RDR-GX7 DVD Recorder, Emerson EWD7003 DVD/CD Player). My Emerson is clearly marked Region 1 only but it will still play my Region 3 DVDs quite well, same goes for my Sony Recorder. I need to know if this will hold true for Region 2 DVDs as well or no. If someone here knows the answer please, please, please tell me.

Well, Hyde, I'm hardly an expert, but I can say with certainty that Region 2 DVD's won't play in machines coded for Region 1 discs. I know this from experience since I tried and failed to play them on my machine (Sony Sony DVP-NS775V). You'll need a Region-free machine to play those Region 2 DVD's.

Yeah but my Region 3s play just fine (for the most part) and my girlfriend has Region 2 DVDs that play on Region 1 machines. Explain that to me.

She probably has a region free machine (and just doesn't realize it)...many of the cheaper DVD players are actually region free. But you could just buy a region 2 player...a cheap one is about $37.

Okay, but will someone explain to me then why my Region 3s seem to play pretty well on my DVD players, please? Am I missing something here about Region 3 or what?

I would agree withh CC1 that your lady friend probably does have a region free machine that will play anything from anywhere as Region 3 is Korea, Thailand, Vietnam, Borneo and Indonesia. In the meantime, Hyde, check the back of your machine for the symbol of a globe with a number in the middle, if it says 1 or any other number, that means your machine is programmed to play DVD's from that particualr region only. I've never owned Region 3 discs, so I don't know if they're compatitble with Region 1 machines. Perhaps your machine has some sort of glitch that enables you to play Region 3 DVD's.

Kinda off-topic but... you can try making your DVD player region free by doing this:

Multi-Region:

* Turn On the unit with the remote controller
* Wait until "no disc" appears in the unit's display
* Press Pause, 3, 1, 4, 1, 5, 9
* The word "CODE" should appear in the display
* Within five seconds, press the key that corresponds to the zone you want i.e. 0 for region free, 1 for region 1, 2 for region 2 and so on
* Again, within 5 seconds, press Pause and Power

If the above fails to work then you may wish to try the following:

* Put the player into Standby mode
* Press 1 and Return on remote for region 1, 2 and Return for region 2, and so on. Use 0 and Return to return player to default region settings
* Press P-Mode and Return to play DVD's with the selected region, auto-switching is Off
* Press Audio and Return for auto-switching On
* Press Angle and Return for MacroVision On
* Press Subtitle and Return for MacroVision Off

Should work for all Sony DVP-XXXXX, just don't blame me if it blows up.

Yeah, but I don't own that particular model. Well, when the DVDs come in if they don't work I'll try that anyway. And if all else fails I'll get a DVD burner that burns onto Region 0. Thanks for all your help, you guys! Love ya!

Yo, Hyde! Not to disparage the info Kumo provided, but if I were you, I'd just buy a region free machine and save yourself the bother of worrying if those modifications will work properly or damage your machine. With region free players as cheap as $50.00 from online stores, it's a considerable bargain. Good luck to you!

every dvd player have some way to make it region free, for exaple i had to punch in a code to get my saba fixed. I just caled the manufacture and asked how to do it and i got the instruction from them, you shoud try it the worst that coud happen will be that they wount help u

Give it a try, it can't hurt...but I've tried several codes on my panasonic, and nothing happened!

Funny thing about Region-free players. Mine plays R2 just fine, it gets hung up on R3 discs and DVD-Rs and a few DVD+Rs. My Region-free is a Toshiba. Perhaps that's why some people say not to discard the old VCR as the homemade DVDs tend to freeze or skip.

Unless your home made DVDs are DVD+RW they will do that. DVD+RWs tend to do better in my experience.

If a region free dvd player is very expensive, there is an alternative:
If you have a Sony PS2, you can buy a card to plug in, so you can play ALL REGIONS. I have one myself, as my dvd player did not play all regions. If interested, I can come up with the manufacturer of the chip-card.

Theres also a few issues with using a PS2 for DVD's--particularly that some of the new DVD's have piracy protection software that makes them look like $hit when you try to play them on a PS2. Apparently it doesn't accept the PS2 as an autorized device.

portable dvd players

I know I should probably subscribe to consumer electronics or something,

but does anybody know what are the decent portable dvd players
that aren't too expensive [cheap ].
Even more specifically, I'm looking for a region free one.
