Japan wasn't spared the disco craze of the 70s80s, but most albums were imports, and much of the disco was kitschy European (such as vampire disco). Japanese music fans also seemed more to prefer R&B and Funk from the US. And they created many of their own New Wave and Punk bands, I guess having no need to import those with such artists as Ryuichi Sakamoto around. Oh yes, and can't forget Boy Bands.
