Hello,

I would like to request help translating the signature on this Japanese sword. I see what I think is a date on one side but am struggling with the rest. Any help you can provide would be greatly appreciated.

Making your light come from a much more oblique angle (low and well to one side) can often help to make engraved markings more distinct in photos.

Thanks very much - I appreciate the info and the photo tip. Its very hard to keep a flash from reflecting.

Would you know what the other side (pictures in my second post in this thread) happens to say?

Not right offhand, but somebody better at this will be along if you wait a bit.

Try disabling the camera's built-in flash and just use a desk or table lamp.

the phrase on the upper right of the second side
撃てし止まん
Uchite shi yaman
I'll destroy (the enemy)!

the first side
為新鋭機日本刀号献上造之
Shin'ēki no tame Nihontō ni gō wo kenjō shi kore wo tukuru.
This sword is made and named for a new model (plane, I guess).

越後國住井口眞円
Echigo koku jū Iguchi Shin'en
Iguchi(family name) Shin'en(male given name) lived in Echigo Province
