hello this is my first time using this site and was looking for some help translating this image for a friend. i have very little experince in Japanese (i did at school but only learnt some basics) the first symbol i think is earth though like i said im not good and am probably wrong. please have a look at the image and let me know what u think as this will be greatly appreciated (mainly for friend do he knows what it says)

Those can be surnames and also place names.

窶ｹgﾅ陳ｴ above the hole and ﾂ静篠静ｬ below it. (Yoshiwara and Ishikawa).

They could be either place names or family names.

Is it 茎[nakago]; a Japanese sword tang or something?

yes it is a sword tang (they never told me that only had photo that i uploaded).

Usually the swordsmith's name is engraved there. I know neither 吉原 nor 石川, though.

surprisingly i found another person with same engraving on their sword hilt must be a small time smith then still atleast got translated thank you all alot for your help it has really been appreciated
