Do Japan named wind by directions ( east west north south ) ? Any link sources & pictorials ?

Is it true that they vary a lot by dialect,because of climatic differences along the length of the archipelago ?

Do you mean just wind in general? Like wind, water, earth, etc. The elements?
Wind I believe is kaze. Infact I'm pretty sure the Kanji for wind is on this mug that I'm drinking from!

Its the kanji for bug, in a "shelter". I think of it as a bug being sheltered from the wind. Bit of keisig's remembering the kanji for you there :P

I'll see if I can grab the kanji.

Honestly, if you're looking for a Pictorial mnemonic, it is the kanji for bug under a mark beneath the table....and a "common" one at that. haha 凡 ぼん、ほん、およそ(mediocre, general, rough). 😌


The radical "shelter," as in roof, house or building, is a completely different etymological link.

By any chance, do you mean 東風[こち, not ひがしかぜ], 南風[はえ, not みなみかぜ], 山背[やませ] or something like that?

Yes,I meant 風 ( kaze ).

See attached example,this is Italian Rosa dei Venti.Italy also has regional denominations of winds.

As far as names of wind related to the direction, I can think of only one example:
窶愬停?｢窶板（窶堋ｱ窶堋ｿﾂ） It's the east wind that blows in spring.
Nothing regional, but it's a very old term.

Most famous regional name of winds (but not related to the direction such as north, south, east, wind) is ﾋ彁ﾂ甲ﾃｩCﾂ（窶堙ｫ窶堙≫?堋ｱ窶堋､窶堋ｨ窶堙ｫ窶堋ｵﾂ）, I think.
It's used in Kobe area, the wind that blows down from north where Rokko mountains are during winter time, it's very strong, and cold wind.
(Similar wind names related with the mountains are 窶敕､窶ｰbﾃｩCﾂ（窶堙絶?堋ｦ窶堋｢窶堋ｨ窶堙ｫ窶堋ｵﾂ）, 窶凩窶挌ﾃｩCﾂ（窶堙や?堋ｭ窶堙寂?堋ｨ窶堙ｫ窶堋ｵﾂ）.)

Some seasonal winds such as ﾂ春ﾋ?ｪ窶敕板（窶堙坂?堙ｩ窶堋｢窶堋ｿ窶堙寂?堙ｱﾂ）, 窶禿佛津坂?堙ｧ窶堋ｵﾂ（窶堋ｱ窶堋ｪ窶堙ｧ窶堋ｵﾂ）
Haru-ichiban is literally the first wind in spring, very strong and blows from south and is believed to bring spring. (Spring here means February - March).
Kobarashi is the north wind which is more than 8km/h that blows late autumn to early winter.

窶堋ｩ窶堙ｧ窶堙≫?｢窶板（窶堋ｩ窶堙ｧ窶堙≫?堋ｩ窶堋ｺﾂ） is the north wind which is very dry and cold, observed mainly in Kanto area during winter.

In Japanese, it's called simply "direction + 窶｢窶?" as same as in English.

窶愬停?｢窶?higashi-kaze: East wind)
ﾂ青ｼ窶｢窶?nishi-kaze: West wind)
窶愿ｬ窶｢窶?minami-kaze: South wind)
窶徒窶｢窶?kita-kaze: North wind)

窶徒窶愬停?｢窶?hokutou-huu)/窶徒窶愬停?堙娯?｢窶?hokutou no kaze)
same for 窶愿ｬ窶愬?nantou), 窶徒ﾂ青ｼ(hokusei), 窶愿ｬﾂ青ｼ(nansei)

窶徒窶徒窶愬停?堙娯?｢窶?hokuhokutou no kaze)
same for 窶愬停?徒窶愬?touhokutou), 窶愬停?愿ｬ窶愬?tounantou), 窶愿ｬ窶愿ｬ窶愬?nannantou),,,

I suspected that person was littering false informations on Japanese culture & language-related @ the anthropology forum,as he suggested that named winds can vary by dialect because of climatic differences along the length of the archipelago.

Of course there are regional differences in the descriptors of seasonal or prevailing winds that don't include a directional word (relative to each observer's perspective, anyway, not invariant to the topography).


Cold, dry wind 乾風、空風、空っ風; 乾っ風 -- Mostly a term used found in West Japan ??? (where I heard it anyway...) for the winds down from Siberia. Only as one possible example...:atsui:

There seem to be a lot of names for directional winds. Wikipedia lists 6 variations for "south wind":

南風 - Wikipedia

One of those is 窶堙懌?堋ｺ which is the namesake for a park near where I live called 窶堙懌?堋ｺﾂ 窶堙個 窶堋ｨ窶堋ｩ.

Most of the time though, I think they would just take the regular name for the cardinal directions and stick them onto 窶堋ｩ窶堋ｺ and be done with it.

No doubt there are a huge variety of localized descriptions for all manner of seasonal words or phenomena (even heavily based on standard "Yamoto kotoba"). You'd need someone with expert knowledge to sort it out, but they exist in droves, in every culture. These are people very close to the land who make their living from it.
