Japan lodged a strong protest with Russia after a Russian patrol plane entered its airspace three times on Monday. The defence minister, Kihara Minoru, confirmed that a Russian Il-38 patrol aircraft had violated Japanese airspace north of Rebun Island, Hokkaido . The military responded by scrambling fighter jets and issuing warnings. Kihara called the incident "extremely regrettable" and urged Russia to prevent a recurrence. Japan has supported the Western position on Ukraine and has provided Kyiv with financial and material support while imposing sanctions on Russia.

Kihara said it was "the first publicly announced airspace incursion by a Russian aircraft since June 2019" when a Tu-95 bomber entered Japanese airspace in southern Okinawa and around the Izu Islands south of Tokyo. In 2023, an aircraft believed but not confirmed to be Russian entered Japanese airspace, according to the defence ministry. Top government spokesman Yoshimasa Hayashi also said on Monday that "we will refrain from giving any definitive information on the intent and purpose of this action, but the Russian military has been active in the vicinity of our country since the invasion of Ukraine". Japan also scrambled fighter jets this month when Russian aircraft flew around the archipelago for the first time since 2019. Tokyo said that the Tu-142 planes did not enter Japanese airspace but flew over an area subject to a territorial dispute between Japan and Russia. Russian and Chinese warships recently held joint drills in the Sea of Japan, part of a major naval exercise President Vladimir Putin said was the largest of its kind for three decades.

Japan scrambled fighter jets in August after the first confirmed incursion by a Chinese military aircraft into its airspace, calling it a "serious violation" of its sovereignty. Then, last week, a Chinese aircraft carrier sailed between two Japanese islands near Taiwan for the first time. Japan called that incident "totally unacceptable from the perspective of the security environment of Japan and the region." China said the passage complied with international law.

On the afternoon of 23rd, the plane of the Russian military performed encroachment of air space off Hokkaido , and it was revealed that the Self-Defense Forces airplane performed warning by the flare.

That plane is used for tracking submarines. Wonder if they had a target they really wanted to follow and forgot where they were ? I'm betting US subs visit Sasebo once in a while.
 
I would assume they were probing Japan's defences and had a good laugh at the flare show.

Japan-Russia relations have worsened since Russian forces invaded Ukraine in February 2022. Tokyo has implemented economic sanctions on Moscow in lockstep with Washington and other like-minded countries.

In 1972 , electronic detection systems could place your location within a 1000 yard circle. I'm betting today's system (space & ground combined) can place you within a 10 foot circle. Amazing , a communist country lied about something.
 
I believe Putin and the modern Russia is considered a sort of capitalism (more a kleptocracy) though there is a communist party existing. The old USSR was considered communist.

The route of the Russian antisubmarine patrol aircraft seems to be looking for something at Soya Channel.
As a magazine opened in the photograph which the fighter of the Self-Defense Forces photographed, it does not seem to be simple encroachment of air space.
Possibly China or a Russian nuclear submarine might not return to port after the military exercise.
As Chinese nuclear submarines always sink, it is worry.

We've been through this at length recently. Communism is an outdated and inaccurate word that many Americans are strangely wedded to.
 
About 3rd grade at 8 years old we learned Russia (communism) was going to drop an atomic bomb on us at any minute. We practiced "duck & cover" getting under our desks for when the bomb hit. Right up until 1968 when I got out of high school , we were taught about the evils of "communism" . Then 1969 to 1973 in the Navy "communism" was the enemy we were worried about. SO.....I guess that's why it's burned into my brain.

Thats how dumb we used to be and still are. What protection is a desk gonna be against an atomic bomb?
 
It was a big joke now looking back on it. Even worse , one whole classroom wall was glass windows. All the flying glass from a bomb blast would have sliced us to ribbons , LOL. It was also a big thing in the 50's & 60's to turn your cellar into a bomb shelter. If a blast hit nearby , the house above you would be gone. Hopefully leaders world round know the use of nukes in a major war would destroy the whole world as we know it. The leaders of North Korea & Iran scare me the most as being clueless idiots about todays warfare.

Let's say that you're 30 miles from the epicentre, so the blast from the bomb doesn't kill you but could shatter the glass in the building. Then getting under the desk could be the difference between not being hurt and some nasty lacerations. So, getting under the desk is quite sensible advice.
