A groundbreaking capsule hotel in Tokyo collects and analyses guest data to enhance sleep quality. NTT Data Japan Corp., an information technology provider, opened the Sleep Lab hotel near Shinagawa Station on 9 August. The hotel gathers heart rate data, breathing frequency, and other sleep-related metrics. This information will improve sleep-related products and benefit food makers, drink companies, and manufacturers of bedclothes. For this innovative project, NTT Data partnered with Nine Hours Inc., a sleep analysis service provider. The hotel exclusively caters to male guests and offers 70 rooms. Nightly rates typically range from 8,000 to 9,000 JPY (USD 54 to 59), though prices may fluctuate based on season and day of the week. Project officials anticipate attracting a diverse clientele, including working professionals, tourists, and general consumers.

Each capsule unit measures 1.2 meters by 1.2 meters and is around 2.1 meters deep. An infrared camera and a directional microphone have been installed above the heads of the prone guests. A sensor beneath the bed sheet detects body movements. The devices are designed to record sleeping hours, the number of rolls and apneas, snoring volume and other details of the slumbers. Guests can receive reports about their sleep afterwards. The anonymous data will be sold to companies with the guests' consent. Bedclothes and food items designed to promote sound sleep are sold at the hotel, along with freebies. Guests who try these items can provide feedback to the manufacturers. "We hope that the analysis results will be used to verify the products' effectiveness and to develop new goods," said a project representative. The hotel, operated by Nine Hours, is housed in an NTT Data commercial complex.
