In 2023, Suntory showcased LiDR, a groundbreaking technology that allows users to draw text, illustrations, and 3D patterns directly into liquid beverages. Dubbed "the world's first submerged food 3D printer," LiDR utilizes food-based drawing materials and, according to the beverage manufacturer, opens up new possibilities for creating visually stunning and interactive beverage experiences.

The results are now presented to the public in Osaka.
Using a cutting-edge 3D printing technology called LiDR, the company creates visually stunning drinks with intricate, edible designs. These innovative beverages feature 3D motifs like roses and diamonds suspended within the drink, crafted from specially formulated edible ink. The LiDR printer carefully deposits these designs into the beverage, ensuring they maintain shape and do not mix with the drink.
After three years of research and development, Suntory has successfully overcome the challenge of creating edible ink that can maintain its desired shape within a liquid environment. To gauge consumer interest and potential for commercialisation, Suntory is conducting a limited-time trial sale of these 3D-printed beverages at Osaka Station: these unique drinks cost some 900 JPY.
