I think I've reached a point where I understand more than I can speak. I had the same thing happen when I was learning French in junior school.
The biggest difference is that in junior school most of my friends were French Canadian and I was immersed in the language in and out of school so I developed an ear for it and was constantly exposed to new words and phrases etc.
Here, I'm more or less alone. I have a few Japanese friends who are very supportive and encouraging but I can't help but feel that I would learn much faster if I lived in Japan for a while...
Ah well... perhaps one day.
