Hey everyone~! How are you guys? In the mail two days ago I received my "The Brilliant Green Singles Collection 97-08" in the mail from Japan. I've loved Buriguri since I went to high school after hearing the song "Angel Song -Eve no kane-" almost 6 or 7 years ago now. I was able to track down a couple of their albums since then and still listen to them constantly on my MP3 player. Tommy-chan's voice still captivates me after all this time.
This year they released their comback single "Stand by Me" as well as wrote "Ash like Snow" for the new Gundam 00 anime. Currently they're working on the next album which is expected by the end of the year. I look forward to it very much!
The songs on the CD all brought back memories some of my favourites on the best of CD include Tsumetai hana (cold flower), Forever to me, Bye! My Boy!, Sono Speed de (at that speed), There will be Love there, Bye bye Mr Mug, Stand by Me, Ash Like snow and Call my name. In fact all of them are pretty good since all the songs were A-sides on all 17 of their past singles from 1997 to 2008. Its a good buy if you just wanna hear all their singles but I was disappointed with the lack of live tracks...since I love listening to Buriguri live. If you own all the Buriguri albums theres nothing new in the best of but you'll probably get it anyway if your a big fan (like me~!). Its also a good CD for the uninitiated.
Today I also had my interview with the Japanese Exchange panel and I think it went OK...I made Hiroko Hashimoto-sensei laugh when I confessed I fell in love with anime watching bishoujo senshi Seraa muun (She asked me what the first anime I watched was...). They were also interested in what kind of work I would want to do when I came back and what sort of research I was interested in.
I havent really thought about it much as of late...but to be honest I have a big interest in two issues in Japan right now. The so called "hikikkomori" or teenagers/adults that choose to lock themselves away from society...and the issue of immigration as a solution to Japan's shrinking population. I'm also interested in foreigners who choose to be naturalised in Japan and what the naturalisation process involves.
Granted my time to research is probably a long way away...since I can barely read the language well enough beyond even an elementary level ><;; I guess I have to keep studying huh?
Well until next time
Ja mata kondo desu ne.

ブリグリ....sounds like a sound heard from the bathroom in the morning after a extra spicy Mexican dinner...lol

最近の日本の歌/歌手ってよくわからないなぁ。

面接試験、うまくいったみたいで良かったね。 " 「美少女戦士セーラームーン」大好きで " という所に関してはノーコメントwww

Hey~! I was like 8 at the time~! :P OK so I wasnt exactly their targeted sex but I loved Sailormoon, Robotech (Macross) and Tekkaman when I was young :P. These days I dont watch as much anime as I did when I was younger or in high school...

The burning rim of pain after eating spicy mexican :P

Buriguri sounded like a mexican dish when I first heard it. Granted its much easier to write than "The Brilliant Green" all the time. I havent heard too much older JPOP. What were you a fan of when you were my age Ashikaga-kun?

As far as J-Pop goes (though that term did not exist then), I was listening to シュガーベイブ、はっぴぃえんど、荒井由実、ジューシィ・フルーツ、ハルメンズ、戸川純、大貫妙子、etc. Other than that, I was all about Steely Dan when I was in my early 20s.

ahhh...I have never heard of Steely Dan my entire life but I briefly skimmed their profile in wiki and it seems like they were quite an interesting band. Do you believe the Japanese music scene is getting worse and worse these days?

I don't listen to enough Japanese pop music these days to really form an opinion but the ones I do hear on the radio all sound the same to me.

Ahhh I can understand how you feel...i feel the same way listening to the radio here too. Very little english pop these days makes me go WOW I have to get the CD. Its different for Japanese music for some reason. Granted I dont like anything such as Johnny's boy bands or the random cute idol girl "trying" to sing...but I have a strange attraction to certain Jrock bands and certain Jpop singers for some reason. Strange? Maybe...

OMG..he DOES look like Chris Rock! LOL
I think it's partly because he was trying very hard to "look black". pffft I've heard from my colleague that he once did a duet with none other than Naomi Campbell and it was a big hit in Japan....

Wow, I never thought Kubota looks like Chris Rock, but how true!! 😆
Yes, I remember the song with Naomi Campbell. That was pretty good (though I forgot the title). 😌

Re: Steely Dan
I have an autographed T-shirt lying in one of my hikidashi... Should I mothball it??

Naomi Campbell....like the supermodel Naomi Campbell? Miss-banned-from-british-airways Naomi Campbell?

Wow I had never known she sang let alone released a duet single in Japan!

She even released an album in Japan, I think.

Whoa Whoa Whoa..... Did you say an autographed Steely Dan T-Shirt??????? No, don't bother with mothballing. You just put it up for sale on yahoo auction!!! HOW did you get it autographed??? I mean, whose autograph is it? Fagen? Becker? Both of them?? Does it say, 「epigeneさんゑ」??

It would have been great if it had my name on it! Sadly, I won it in a drawing from an FM station here. (I'm a Steely Dan fan, too.)
It is a "Two Against Nature" T shirt with both their names on it. It's sealed in a plastic bag, and, no, I'm not selling!

Ms. Campbell is not in the business of selling her "singing", you see. What she sells is her ATTITUDE! Now, listen closely to the second verse of the song. When the beat hits you between the bridge and the chorus, what you feel is NOT the machine-generated drum beat but a Nokia cell phone thrown by Ms. Campbell hitting you in the head! The slight numbness you feel afterwards lets you know you have just listened to a Naomi Campbell tune.

To quote a Steely Dan song, Ms. Campbell is,

"Another negative girl
Spinning out of the frame
Exquisitely limpid
The original classic thing - more of the same"

I have no idea what that means, and THAT is Naomi Campbell.
