TiTech IGP Questions

No, not yet. I'm still waiting. Did you try to contact your professor 2nd time?
Nope.. I'm afraid to ask about the result because he told me that "hopefully it will be released around end of Feb"..

(I'm thinking of contacting him around end of this month if I still do not hear anything after 2 weeks though:unsure:)

Hi there, have you received any official/unofficial notification from your supervisor/department regarding the scholarship selection?

(I'm thinking to contact my supervisor next week to ask about it)

Nope, not yet. He said that I will get the result directly from admission division around early to mid march

Hi! I don't want to make you become more nervous but my Professor just has sent me a new form of MEXT application and ask me to complete it and confirm something such as do I still have the intention to study at Tokyo Tech and will I receive another scholarship.

Wish you all the best

Congratulations!

I have a feeling that I won't be able to get the scholarship (just had a nightmare a couple of days ago that I'm not getting this scholarship).. considering that I have not heard anything from my advisor yet😞

Thank you!

I just have received the official result from Tokyo Tech. I was selected as a Mext scholarship holder. The package of documentaion will be delivered to me later

You should ask them. I think they will at least send the reject email to unselected people
Alright, just sent an email to the International Student Exchange Division to ask about it.. hopefully they will reply around next Monday.

Hey everyone. I'm also applying for TITECH IGP(A) for this year's enrollment and was notified that I "have been selected as a MEXT Student". Is that final, though? Has anyone heard from the admission office since last March's announcement?

Just a request to you all on this thread. As you know, it's very difficult to get into Japan at the moment because of the restrictions placed due to the virus. If any of you get information from MEXT or the university on this, please share it - it will probably be extremely useful to others.

Carry on the excellent thread!

Hi All,

Kind of surreal to be posting here here after reading hundreds and hundreds of posts. I'm currently an MS student in Geophysics and just sent in my application for IGP-A and MEXT at TiTech. I thought I would document the process and see if anyone else is also applying.

About me:
American (USA)
B.A. in Geology (my local school only offers BA, but the education is top-notch anyway) with a GPA ~ 3.97 (only 1 A-)
Two conference paper publications and two speaker/presenters at regional conferences.
Finishing a masters in Geophysics currently with a GPA = 4.0
Total of 4.5 years of research experience.
Total education: 18.5 years

A. I contacted my intended professor in late October and after a video meeting (45 minutes) he sent a consent email for him to join my lab (yay).
B. Got all the application documents completed last week and sent in my application. For those curious about the research plan, I wrote a regular research plan (4.5 pages) with bracket [#] citations. My proposal was written with the intent that it would be beneficial to complete in Japan and in that specific lab. I combined "research topic" and "study program" into one, and just wrote the whole thing formally.
C. The wait!!!

I have a few questions for anyone that has the time:

1. As mentioned, by bachelors is a B.A., would this count against me during the admission process? I had to write and present a thesis, and attend field camp, which is generally the only difference at "normal" universities. Also, would it look weird for me to apply for another masters? (Since IGP-A is MS + PhD).

2. I selected "I am applying for MEXT and WILL enroll even if I am not selected", was this the incorrect choice? Obviously I'm really banking on the scholarship, but if absolutely necessary I could fund myself with my own savings/loans.

3. I must ask, as everyone does, what are my chances? Subjective, I know, but I scoured the forums and could find very few Americans that applied or even got the MEXT scholarship to compare myself to. My potential advisor said I was the first westerner to apply to his lab, so I don't know how they view Americans.

4. Anyone else applying for IGP-A at TiTech for 2021? Join me in the long wait until the results are posted in March!

Hello rockdue:

Good of you to share your experiences for others:

BA as opposed to a BSC? I would not worry about it since your major is geology.

2. I selected "I am applying for MEXT and WILL enroll even if I am not selected", was this the incorrect choice? Obviously I'm really banking on the scholarship, but if absolutely necessary I could fund myself with my own savings/loans.
No, this is not an "incorrect choice" UNLESS you are applying for a "needs based" scholarship (MEXT scholarships are NOT "needs based"). Basically they have a certain number of scholarship recommendations (they choose you and then recommend you to MEXT- and except for every unusual circumstances, MEXT will approve as the university has already vetted you).

If you choose the MEXT scholarship ONLY
For example if they have 3 scholarship slots, and you are in the top 3, you will be accepted with scholarship. If you are number 4 they will reject you.

If you choose, "I am applying for MEXT and WILL enroll even if I am not selected"
For example if they have 3 scholarship slots, and you are in the top 3, you will be accepted with scholarship. If you are number 4 (and qualified, they will offer you a "self-funded admission". )

MEXT scholarships are chose on academic merit, not financial need.

You are may be "overthinking" - Why are there few US applicants, - in the US the education level is very high - so why go overseas…?
Culturally, the US (no offense intended) is IMO a bit egocentric, so overseas "education is not so highly sought" especially in non-English speaking environments.

I think "how they view" Americans is NOT the big issue (although it would surprise me if at least some of your interviewers had not done POST DOC in the US) - it is how they view YOU in the interview.

Team player, hard working, "research mind" & willing to learn!

Good luck

Hello, I also choose the same choice as you. In case that you can't get MEXT scholarship, there are still many scholarships you can get after the admission.

1) you can found some scholarships through Tokyo Tech
Scholarships for International Students | Tuition and Scholarships | Current Students | Tokyo Institute of Technology

2) you may ask for tuition exemption

Even if the first semester and entrance fee cannot be exempted , this quite useful.

3) you may find another scholarship from somewhere else. There are a lot of organizations providing scholarships. You might find by yourself base on your government or relasted organization.

4)Do part time job during study
In the worse case, this might be necessary. Many oversea students also do part time job.

I am also on my plan base on these 4 choices. However, I hope we all can get MEXT since it's the easiest way. Don't worry, we are on the same boat 😊
