My son has managed to lose the master key (本体) of our house. According to my wife, you can't do a copy of a copy in Japan, although I never had any problems doing this with house keys in Britain. Anyone have experience of this/opinions?

"It depends" is the short answer.

I've had copies of vehicle keys made from copies, but the person doing the work always emphasizes that they won't guarantee a copy made from a copy will actually work and that they won't refund the cost of the copy they made if it doesn't work.

It's a cheap gamble. Certainty cheaper than changing the lock.

Thanks for the reply. In fact a kid at school found the key yesterday and handed it in so the problem was solved.
Your observation is consistent with my experience today. I took what I thought was the master to a Mr Minit place to get it copied. It turned out not to be the master, the guy who made the copies made a similar comment, but it turned out that both keys were OK when I tried them in the door but a little bit less smooth than the key I copied them from.
