私はメロコさんに着物を買ってあげた。
I understand this as: I bought a kimono for her = I did a favour to her by buying a kimono.

My question is: who's currently having the kimono?
Is kimono still with me or have I already given it?

I think you are just stating a fact. You bought a kimono for Meroko.

In this example it's not clear wether you already gave the kimono to Meroko, it depends on the context. For example if you say you went shopping with her and bought her the kimono she'll most likely already have it. If her birthday is coming up and you bought her a kimono you might still have it in your possession and give it to her later.

Those two interpretations are both possible, but I would use 私はメロコさんに着物を買った。 for the former case.
