TiTech IGP Questions

Ahh... I was planning to take Narita Express to Shibuya Station since the train only costs 1,500 yen for foreign passport holders!

Whoa, so many at Umegaoka...

Hi Everyone,
I am a new member from Vietnam. For the moment, I have just graduated from Electronics and Telecommunications program in my university. I have great interest in information retrieval, data mining and machine learning. I am applying for TiTech's Education Program of Advanced Information Technology Leaders this year and I am some questions relating to the type of interview questions. Could anyone share some interview experience with professors in Computer Science Department? And could you share with me the interview question that you had?
Thank you very much!

I am planning to apply for the Education Program of Advanced Information Technology Leaders as well. Although, I contacted a professor with my CV and transcript and got a rejection outright due to my GPA (3.18 on a 4.0 scale). I wonder if I should I contact another professor at all. Is my GPA too low for titech? or do I have a chance?

You will have to present your Bachelor's thesis, your research plan in TiTech and answer some technical questions.

The questions will be basic computer science and some may related to your field. For example, I got some thing like, What's automata ? What's the difference between DFA and NFA ? What's the difference between Compiler and Interpreter ? What is Operating system ? and so on. but others might be different. So, good luck ! :D

I'm really not sure about the GPA, but if I were you, I'll try contact other professors (as long as he's in the field you're interested in). Good luck ! :)

Yup, I contacted another professor and he simply requested my research plan. I'm working on that right now.

On a site note, can someone upload their own research proposal for titech for reference? Or send it to [email protected]? It'll be a great help, Thanks!

Thank you very much for your answer, quizer.

Mr. quizer, is your research topic related to Language Processing? My proposed research topic is about Machine Learning and my proposal is about one page long. Should I lengthen my proposal a little more? Thank you very much for your time :).

No, my research is about Software Engineering and my research plan is just one page and a half but others' may be more than this. So, I guess as long as you can describe it clear enough and your professor is okay with it, you should be fine. :)

I've succeeded in getting approval from a professor, after going through a preliminary interview ^.^

Hi guys! I've been reading posts on this forums since last year., but this is my first post.

Congratulation Naveed. I've been accepted by a Prof too after an internal interview.
HoangNT, did your prof give you the interview date ? It depend of Professors, but It should more or less be basic questions. I've been asked why Japan and not a french speaking country (as I'm a native french speaker), Why Titech and specially his lab ? ^^, why he should accept me over other students from other countries ?, and so on.. In my case, no technical questions about my research proposal or my major.
Hope this post will help you !

Thank you very much Monsieur Zobel. I got my approval since October and my professor asked me to send the scanned version of my application. Thank you again for your answer, I really appreciate it. I hope I will be lucky (and good) enough to be able to meet all of you good sir in the future :).

Thanks guys, and it's great that you all made it through the first phase. I'm not sure what are the chances of making it through the rest of the process, but lets give it our best :)
zobel: In my case it was fairly technical, but not too difficult.

Mine interview was techinical too. The questions are about my past projects and research followed by an algebra question. But what I worry about is the official interview with 5 TiTech professors, I have a brother who is studying nuclear engineering at TiTech right now and he said it will be difficult and even a Chinese MEXT researcher failed the test :-s. Anyway, may the best get the scholarship ^^.

I'm having some trouble with document number 7: "Recommendation Letter from the Dean or equivalent official of the applicant's home university"

The dean from my institution doesn't issue recommendation letters. I could ask the Chairman of my of department but I've already got the evaluation sheet recommendation filled by him. What are my options?

You should ask the admission division at TiTech, you can find their email address in the last part of this site:
International Graduate Program (A) | Information for International Students | Prospective Students | Tokyo Institute of Technology
Personally, I think it is a formal letter and it can be written by the Chairman of your department as long as it is addressed to professor Mishima.

Guys, is it really necessary to email the admission office for those kind of questions.? Naveed, I think there is at least one person in your institute who writes recommendation letters for students who plan to leave. If it's the chairman, then ask him for a recommandation. You should have asked him both documents the first time to avoid such situation. But, I don't think it should be a problem for him since he already accepted to fill the Titech recommendation sheet.

Yea I agree with Mr. Zobel too.
But since it's better safe than sorry, I'll ask the Admission Office. And I did. My problem was the dean of my school has been promoted to VP position so he signed my LoR as VP of the university. I asked the Admission Office about the issue and they nicely answered me. :D
