I'm from mainland China and do find the logics of a lot of my compatriots ridiculous. Yeah it is true that Japan seriously hurt China in WW2, but you know, countries in human world do nasty things to each other all the time, and what the heck does that have to do with individual Chinese persons? As a Chinese person, I find Japanese people adorable and friendly, and feel sorry about what the mobs have done recently to Japanese enterprises back in China. I know a lot of my compatriots again will rebuke me for speaking for Japan as a Chinese person, but I don't think the past mistakes of someone else can justify your illegal revenge or hatred today. Anyway, I've forgiven Japan for what it did in WW2 and please forgive those ignorant Japan haters from China.

Welcome to the forum and thanks for sharing your thoughts!

As for the anti-Japanese protests you mentioned: it seems that they are, if not organised or sanctioned, then at least tolerated by the Chinese government. To what extent, do you believe, are these protests genuine manifestations of civilian outrage?

Overall, I think it's double sadness. On one hand, many Chinese kids do not dare to love Japan even if they want. On the other hand, people from outside China always have the impression that the Chinese always hate Japanese. I'd like to break the stereotype anyway.

I agree, we have to look beyond the sensatinalist headlines and all the sabre-rattling. On my last visit to China I was surprised by the ubiquity of Japanese (pop) culture.

Nice to have you on board!

Hi chicagian239!

It's nice to have someone like you saying that instead of the haters lol. But I agree with Thomas.

Anyway welcome to the forum.

I Think the fact that China and Japan are both rife with nationalism, have nationalism encouraged / fostered by their own governments is a good thing.

Also the fact that nationals in China, Korea, Japan are all shown varying degrees of propaganda, again in a pro nationalistic anti japan/china/Korea vein (delete as appropriate) is great

After all if Japan, China, Korea and India all got together, moved past their petty differences, developed a post nationalist framework and worked together. It would quickly become the most powerful economic, strategic and cultural block in the world.

And we can't have that now can we?

no no better you squable,
better you fight over tiny things,
let us worry about the big things,
we have been doing it for a while now. ;-)

thanks for your clarification
I am in Hong Kong and am always concerned about those news in mainland China
in fact many Hong Kong people here, especially the youngsters, is just laughing at the ridiculous move of those anti-Japanese people.

Personally I guessed this large-scale protest was driven by people belonging to the Communist Party (As I know from the fact that, majority of people in China belong to Communist Party..)

A lot of people might be confused about exactly why they themselves hate Japan.

It might not exactly be about what happened 70 years ago. It might have more to do with the fact that Japan is pretty ignorant about it all, acting like it never even happened. And that is a perfectly good thing to be pissed off about today.

Still, it does not justify rioting and causing regular Japanese trouble. Some Japanese know enough to be ashamed of Japan's imperial past, and you don't know who they are until you ask.

I'm sure the average Chinese on the street has little knowledge what the average Japanese knows. They are unfortunately angry due to propaganda.
I have two students who are Chinese, married to Japanese, and living here for a number of years. Both have no grudge against Japanese, and the one has explicitly said that she was told untrue things about Japan in school, much like Chinese were, at one point, taught that Chinese had more food and better daily life than Americans, to help national pride. I guess in the 70's America was the fake-rival to them, and they've shifted to Japan. It's all arbitrary.
I think the OP had the right idea in calling them ignorant.

Yes and no. Some of the "propaganda" is in fact true. And some of the lies do have a point. That point is when they make people angry who should be angry, even if there is misdirection, lies and flawed reasoning. Of course I do condemn the misdirection etc. No one should be angry at the son for the sins of the father. That is just stupid and leads to injustice and unnecessary problems.

They lie in American classrooms as well, but perhaps a bit more cleverly. They also lie in Japanese classrooms.

But as I say, there is a good reason to have a grudge against the Japanese gov and some historians at least. They deny the truth of what Japan did in the war years and its disgusting. Even an act of the U.S. Congress will not make them budge about denial of the sex slaves.

They are ignorant. But that does not mean they are completely wrong, unfortunately. It would certainly be nice if they smartened up and got angry for the right reasons only. That would at least provide Japanese with a way out and a way to keep friendly ties. All Japan should have to do is admit the past to appease them. Really, nothing more can be expected. But the way so many Chinese view this, they won't think that is enough. So there is no solution and THAT is China's fault.

The intent of the propaganda is not righteousness.

I will always stand by the idea that a well-fed, housed population will never care about much. That is Japan today. It's ignorant to think a person born in the 90's will take an active interest in what happened in the 40's. I love history, but it is pretty much the myth of Sisyphus expecting people to be active about topics that don't affect their day to day lives. That's humanity. That's how we evolved. I don't necessarily like it, but I won't get angry about it. Humans are animals responding to their environment. There is nothing in the environment to make Japanese tear their hearts out about WW II.

What goes on in American and Japanese classrooms is irrelevant to the topic of Chinese Japan haters.

They attacked Japanese citizens in China. Not the government, but Japanese citizens. That's stupid. No excuses for that. No sympathy (from me at least).

Yeah, they are wrong. Some Japanese 80 years ago did something bad. Yup, they did it. And they try to solve things by blaming all Japanese living today.

I think if we substituted American for Chinese, you'd be vilifying them, but it's the poor Chinese, so you're sympathetic. **** 'em. They are no better than the American hick who cancels the prom because a gay couple is coming. I appreciate that both were raised in ignorance, but, you know, the Internet and stuff... If you're a divider, **** it. There is a balance between being an extremist wing nut and being totally apathetic.

Please forgive those ignorant Japan haters from China

The Chinese people are surely not responsible for the anti-Japanese propaganda that they're being forcefed all day long.

Anyway, I've forgiven Japan for what it did in WW2 and please forgive those ignorant Japan haters from China.

1\Read more history dude. Do not judge history quickly until you know the whole thing of 1700 yrs long. You can still say your hometown ppl are ignorant, until you finish learning history. But do not judge it even before you know nothing about history.
2\Recently, It's Japanese behavior provoked Chinese. Not Chinese do something to Japanese. Be aware of this.

By ignorant he meant that some people simply can't get over stuff that happened so many years ago they weren't even alive. He seems to know better than to let the past affect him. History gives you no reason to hate others... What do you think Europe would look like if we still held some petty grudes because of wars past? Pretty much every country here has been at war with everyone, in some way. Germany probably has the strongest economy here, and we all benefit from that. Because we realize that those who started WW2 have died long ago and have nothing to do with those in power now, or the people living there. And you confuse "government" with "people". Think of the riots when this Senkaku/Diaoyu thing started, when some people attacked Japanese shops; what did they have to do with some politicians' decision?

All those things you cite for justifying your hate against Japanese is just that. Self-justification.

In the past, Japan invaded Korea every 200-300 yrs. While Korea invaded Japan none.

Japan's government is voted by normal people. Their minsiter said "Japan is back" in front of the whole world, immediately when he took the office.
The only thing Japan could be proud in history, was they invaded China, robbed countless treasures, killed tens of million ppl in Asia. And they could fight Russia, China, England, France and US together.
So you tell me, when their leader(voted by normal japanese, remember) said JAPAN IS BACK, what should Chinese react?
In Chinese feeling, Japan just want to back to Nazi era.
They are a whole nation try to do this. once Adolf used nationalism to encourage normal Germans, then nationalism became Nazy.
Now Japan's leader encourage their normal people with nazy idea again, and making the situation in Asia strain again.

And, have you ever really meet some Chinese are nationallity or some Chinese beat you or look down on you, have you?
Chinese are most peaceful nations in the world. When they are your neibours, they just make your community more safe and peaceful. So i think when Chinese feel really angry. It is naive to blame Chinese.

Actually, Japan has let the situation die down, but it appears as if CHINA (CCP) has been provoking Japan recently. China sent fighter jets into Japanese air space over 40 TIMES in ONE DAY. China is looking for trouble. http://www.japantoday. com/category/national/view/chinese-military-planes-flew-near-disputed-isles-40-times-in-one-day

Do not tell me China is a peaceful nation, when the world's largest genocide was committed by the Chinese government. (80 million people killed by CCP!)

Funny. Japan nazy invaded China and took Senkaku islands just before WWII. At 2012, 9, JP's leader suddenly announced to BEGIN to own the sovereignty of this Senkaku islands to provoke both Chinese and American. Because Japanese government wanted to get rid of the control of US, so that they can have nuclear weapons, they can develope your millitary industry freely and also they can make themselves to be a strong nation again.
Yes, Chinese feel angry with their country, both of their nazy mind and their action of Senkaku islands. JP started this, and maybe it is Chinese can stop this.
At the end of WWII, Jp's surrender paper to UN said they should gave Senkaku back. And because of China's civil war, US had to give the control right of the islands to JP, but not the ownership. That's why Japanese declared they owned this islands until 2012 suddenly.

So what, so they could invade China and even had some competition between their nazy soldiers of killing Chinese in WWII? So they could rob Chinese's islands and swallowed independent countries freely?
So that they could do experiments by human bodies and cuted pregnant women's belly just for fun?Unit 731 - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
So that whole of their nation can still worship their shrine full of war crimes?Yasukuni Shrine - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
So that their leader said recently that their country will back to empire like WWII and they should own armies?
Why cannot JP learn some peaceful spirit from Chinese, after JP have been CH neighbour for 2000 yrs? You blame victims for other's wrong actions. That's totally wrong.

And I still donot care who you are, where you are from. Maybe you donot know what happend between China and Japan. That is the truth.
And you were speaking for JP nazy. That thing made me angry.
Maybe you are just some wasp from america, but remember one thing, nazy both had ever existed in Europe and Asia. And in Asia, it never died.

I do not justify any war crimes the Imperial Army of Japan has done, and I fail to see how any Japanese war crimes have to do with anything about the cultural revolution in China..
But.. if you must..

Prime Minister Shinzo Abe never said anything about bringing back the Japanese Imperialist Army from World War II, and before.. He just said he would "bring Japan back." That is all up for interpretation. My best guess is when he meant that was, when Japan had a booming economy in the 1980's, not at all with anything to do with WWII.

Also, about Yasukuni Shrine, get over yourself. How old are you? Were you even alive for World War II?! Yasukuni Shrine is not even government owned for your information, it's privately owned. They shouldn't have to change it up one bit even if the government wanted them to. So why should they change it some Chinese and Koreans want them to? How about the shrine visits then? Well, the Prime Minister and emperor don't go to the shrine to pay respects JUST to the War Criminals. There are names of soldiers on there that date all the way back to the Boshin War . It's not just all for WWII war criminals. One more thing, there are the 'spirits' of 2,466,532 soldiers at Yasukuni Shrine, and only 14 of them are Class-A war criminals.. I think you're getting a little bent on this..

Japan didn't take Senkaku right before World War II, they've had it ever since the late 1800's. World War II was not even in sight of then.
China had recognized Japanese sovereignty on Senkaku until 1970 when gas reserves were found. Hmmm, I wonder why?
