大辞林 considers 浴びる and 浴びせる to be a transitive/intransitive pair.

〔「浴びせる」に対する自動詞〕。「浴びる」に対する他動あ 戟l

NJEC, labels 浴びる as vi, and 浴びせる as vt.

However, 広辞苑 consider them both to be transitive, so do EDICT.

I am sure 浴びせる is vt, but what is the status of 浴びる?

We usually stay シャワーを浴びる

So if 浴びる is transitive, then を is the direct object marker, シャワー is therefore the object, but how can we shower the シャワー??

But if 浴びる is intransitive, を is now a medium/space marker? (like 公園を歩く).

浴びる/浴びせる seem to fit Type D transitivity pair (a dictionary of basic Japanese Grammar, P. 586).

So what exactly is 浴びる?

Good question.

浴びる is a 再帰動詞 "reflexive verb". 再帰動詞 takes object(ヲ格補語), so it's transitive in this sense. However, 再帰動詞 ALWAYS affects only the subject themselves, i.e., both the agent and patient are always the subject. Also, it doesn't have the passive voice except so-called 迷惑の受身 "passive of adversity", so it's close to intransitive verb semantically. 着る and 脱ぐ belong to 再帰動詞, too. As same as 浴びる, these verbs don't have their intransitive counterparts, instead, they have true transitive counterparts 着せる and 脱がす, respectively.

I don't understand. TC seems to grasp the sense of perception himself. (I didn't mean Toritoribe's explanation was unhelpful)
