Monbukagakusho Scholarship for Postgraduate!!

I applied at the embassy in Miami, FL. The application deadline was May 21.
It took them about 2 weeks to contact me about whether or not I made it to the interview and testing stage. They sent me a cut and paste generic e-mail letting me know that I was denied.
Also, it's not possible for me to better prepare. They won't tell me (or anyone else) why they were or weren't selected. I'm not a psychic or a mind reader, so I have no idea what I can do better next time, which is pretty frustrating.

Aw, jeez, I'm sorry. I had no idea that the American embassies filtered before the interviews, too. :frown: Did they say why they won't tell you? Do you know how many people applied?

Hey!
Well, things changed a bit from my last post. A professor from Hiroshima University is willing to be my supervisor so if I get the scholarship I'll study there from next year.
The exam is on this friday, and I hope everything goes well. I've heard that Japanese language test can be quite difficult and I am reading as much as I can.
Are you studying in Japan now?

In my country, the Japanese Language test is optional. I chose not to sit for it as I could only read hiragana at that time! Yes, I am studying in Japan now. :)

Best of luck!

I think the reason they won't tell me why I wasn't selected was because of the amount of people that applied. In the e-mail they sent me there was a section about them having to be super strict with who they chose because of how many people applied.

I have no idea exactly how many people applied. If I had to guess, anywhere from 50-100, maybe more.

I got my answer as well :(

Here is what they sent me $%^&!

Re: MEXT Research Scholarship application

Dear "my full name",

Thank you for applying for the Monbukagakusho Research Scholarship. Although your application is impressive, we regret to inform you that the scholarship committee has decided not to offer you an interview this year. This year was the most competitive in recent memory and the available slots are very few. The decision should in no way be considered a negative evaluation of your qualifications, as many highly qualified and skilled applicants had to be turned down this year. We encourage you to re-apply after you have completed further research in your chosen field, which may improve your chances of getting a research scholarship. Please check our website for updates on application availability (url to japanese consulate) and best wishes for your continued study.

Sincerely,

That was all. I can tell that is a copy and paste generic message because the link listed have an error and the page does not take you anywhere unless you correct "-japapn.go.jp/jic.html" for "-japan.go.jp/jic.html"

I am not happy at all! I applied the 14th and they sent me this email the 21th four days to review everybody application and recommendation letters etc...? I mean are you serious? what type of evaluation they did?

I will also post my research proposal soon at the site I am creating.

Any comments are welcome!

That makes my heart sink to see all those denial letters. That never feels good, my condolances to you all.

I'm a hopeful future MEXT scholar but it won't be for awhile. I'll graduate with my bs in computer science in 2013 so I suppose I'll have to wait and apply for 2014 unless there's a way to go in october of 2013...I'm assuming not but if I'm wrong please correct me!

Any other computer science majors accepted and/or in Japan? If so where are you attending? Any suggestions on prevalent research topics to start looking into? Any tips or examples on writing the research outline? I want to be utmostly perpared.

Maybe I'm jumping the gun here, but I'm already worrying now that I'm seeing how selective the US selection is getting by the results posted on these forums. Any advice ect. is much appreciated.

Good luck and congrats to all you bravely pursuing your dreams with this extraordinary opportunity. Maybe I'll see some of you in 2014?
🌹

Thanks so much for sharing!

Erytheia,
I don't necessarily think the US selection is more strict. One of the guys during the exam was apparently in contact with the US MEXT Coordinator for quite a while. E-mailing back and forth and visiting the Japanese consulate a few times asking questions. He stated that the statistics are quite impressive. In the Southern CA consulate alone, last year they sent 4 out of the 10 that took the test. He also stated that they also plan to send just as much this year out of the 10 people taking the exam. Compared to other countries where there are more than 10 people taking the exam, that's pretty good in my opinion. As for the validity of his claims, he seems like someone who wouldn't lie or exaggerate so I believed him.
And like some people in here, my MEXT journey stopped too early. The hardest part was writing the "I didn't get the nomination" letter to my potential advisor who wrote me a REALLY nice letter telling me really liked my research proposal and wanted me to join his lab next year. :(
Oh well, I'll try again this coming January under university nomination instead. Good luck to all of you still in the race!!
As for YKK, I REALLY hope you get it this time around. I can't imagine getting the denial letter that many times. 📣

Spork,
Thanks again you have a lot of good insider-ish info! My consulate would be the southern California one so that's good to know. I still am not loving the 40% rate...not bad but call me a glass half empty person I see that as 60% failure. >.>
Well I have a couple years to figure out how to make sure to be in the 40%. That's really horrible with the potential adviser, I imagine that would be a cringeworthy task.

Can someone explain how to apply without a diploma? I know that you get some letter promising graduation from the registrar but does anyone have an idea of how far ahead you can get one of these and apply using this method? Example: I'd earn my diploma in May 2013 but could I apply for the 2013 scholarship (would have to apply during 2012 and would therefore have a year of school to go)? Anyone done anything like this?

@Erytheia, at least in Argentina, if you apply for a undergraduate research you can't without having already a degree, so, the important part is the Academic Transcript(which contain each subject-course and mark you got during your stay at university), so you can't I think(I have waited 2 years to apply because the university didn't give my Academic Transcript in time, I got my degree in 2008, and I recieve my diploma and transcript a month ago T-T) .
Ask to your embassy to be sure, also read this www[dot]ve[dot]emb-japan[dot]go[dot]jp/esp/cultula/becas/2011/postgrado/kenkyu_e[dot]pdf
Good luck
(bytheway today I've sent the documentation to the embassy(29), and the deadline is tomorrow, it problably won't get in time >.<, I live really far from the embassy).

Hello everybody, this ist my first post.
I have been called to attend the interview next week and I must explain my study program too, what could you recommend me?

Hi, i passed the Monbukagakusho Scholarship for Postgraduate and required to collect all related documents. Please help me on how to write study plan perfectly.

Dear all,
I am from Cambodia.
Nice to get to know u all here. I just passed the Mext exam. Now I am required to submit research plan which I have no idea how to start. Hope to be recommended by u all how to do it. Thanks in advance.

Hey!
We had to English and Japanese. The tests were very easy. Japanese was at 3 kyuu level, when I saw the questions I couldn't believe. English was easy as well.
Yesterday I was informed that I was offered an interview which will be held next Wednesday. ^^
I hope everything goes well. ^^

getting professor

Hello everyone! I am new here and this is my first post.🙂
I wanna ask, when we actually looking for a professor (to accept us)?
Is it after we passed writing test & interview? Or is it before the interview?
Are we going to be asked about LA (Letter of Acceptance from professor) in the interview?
Hmm, actually I've done my writing test and going to have interview in the next few days.
I need the answer pleeeease...:)

Hellow! :)

First of all, congrats for passing the document selection. As for getting professor, I suggest you to start find it before you have your interview. Some people said that it will help your chance of getting the scholarship. But since I assumed you must have had your interview by now, I think you should start looking for professor soon. At least you have to sort out your preferences of professor and contacting them, so by the time you got all the documents from embassy (if you passed the screening *cross fingers*), you just need to ask if they willing to accept you as their student and send the LoA straight away.

Good luck :)

Hello, I passed Monbusho written exam and accepted for interview. If there is someone who can help me for interview questionnaire, let me have this.

Thanks in advance

I had interview two days ago. There were two persons, one who asked questions only and one who was taking notes while I was talking. They were very friendly, and I was feeling as if I was having a chat with my friends, not with people who work in the embassy.

As I am originally from Serbia but I have gained Bachelor Degree in Italy they asked all about my life there. How was the University, lectures, my experience in general. Then they moved to my stay in Japan. I was asked what I liked most, places I visited etc.

In the end they asked me about my kenkyuu naiyou, and I explained what I would like to do and what kind of job I would like to have in the future.

The results will be next week. We'll see. ^^

Good luck!

@urnaa
No prob! ^^

I didn't had any list of questions for the interview. I just prepared something about my research proposal and that's it. I think they just want to meet you better, not to test your language ability.

@Lilynoh

I had interview last Thursday and I was told that I would get the results by Friday which did not happen. All I can do is wait. ^^

Hi all.

I can't believe I passed the interview. Now the next, securing the LoA. Is there anybody who went to Waseda, Tohoku or Kumamoto University by Educational Technology or similar field? I was totally thinking that my Research plan was poorly written. (Wrote only in a week, one page) Could that hinder obtaining LoA?

hi!
i would be really really grateful if anyone cared to answer my queries..i wish to study postgradute in medicine in japan under MEXT scholarship but i missed the exam conducted by japanese embassy.i was however told at the embassy that if i could directly contact the professors that can offer MEXT scholarship and provide them with my academic certificates i can still be selected.the problem here is i don't know where to look for the professors that can offer MEXT scholarship.plzz someone help me with this.i will be greatly obliged

about scholarship

Hi everybody, I asked my embassy if they'd count my two year associate's degree in my total years of schooling for the grad program but they said it won't. Does anybody know of a university that can count my associate's degree other than Toyohashi University of Tech? I'll be having my bachelor's degree this year too. Thanks in advance!

Hi guys,

I'm currently pursuing my Master's through a MEXT research scholarship. When I originally applied for the scholarship, I only intended to take a Master's, and filled out the application form accordingly. After a year and a half in my university, however, I'm beginning to consider continuing on to the PhD track. It's still early, but I'm wondering if it's still possible to extend my scholarship into a Doctoral course despite my original intentions. Does which box you filled in on the application have real weight, or is that only related to the initial application process?

Hi guys, I am wondering if there anyone who are applying MEXT scholarship 2012 from University Recommendation?
