Hi,

1. 物質的な豊かな生活が送れる日

Is 送れる the potential form of 送る in the sense of "live one's life"? So, literally this would mean "days in which one can live a materially rich life"?

2. Instructions for a textbook exercise:

基本型2ではそのほか、さまざまな場合について,入れ かえ語句を使って各所を入れかえる。

Translation given: "In basic model 2, and in the other applications, replace the indicated portions with the Replacement Phrases."

Does そのほか mean "in addition to 基本型2"? In other words, is it asking you to carry out 入れかえ語句を使って各所を入れかえる in two scenarios, firstly the scenario described by 基本型2で, and secondly the scenario described by さまざまな場合について?

3. 転勤者の二割、約十五万人とされる単身赴任者(労働省推 計)。

Translation given: "According to an estimate by the Ministry of Labour, 20 percent of the workers transferred by their companies, or approximately 150,000 persons, reside separately from their families."

How does とされる work? In the dictionary this is defined as "... is considered to ..." but I don't see how that fits. I guess it is literally と + される (from する), but even that I'm not certain of.

4. まず気がかりなのは本人の健康だが、食生活でみる限り 非単身者と差がない、という意外な調査結果がこのほど まとまった。

Translation given: "The health of these transferred workers can be a primary cause for concern. Surprisingly, however, the results of a recently completed study attest that the eating habits of workers living away from their families are about the same as for workers living with their families."

a) How does 食生活でみる限り非単身者と差がない work? I'm trying to get it to mean, literally:

食生活でみる限り = (if we) limit (ourselves) to looking at eating habits
非単身者と差がない = (then) there is no difference compared to workers living with their families

Could something like this be correct?

b) Does このほど refer to the fact that eating habits don't vary between the two types of worker?

1)
Yes.

2)
No. そのほか refers to another exercise done in basic model 2 (besides the one probably mentioned before), i.e., learners do two (or more) types of exercises in the model.

3)
約十五万人とされる単身赴任者
workers transferred without family, whose number is considered to be approximately 150,000

4) a)
みる means more likely "to judge" in this case.

(7) (ア)判断する。評価する。
「世間を甘く〈みる〉」「人を〈み〉て法を説く」
見る - Weblio辞書

食生活でみる限り
as far as judging on their eating habits

b)
このほど: this time
"Recently" is the one in the translation.

Thanks Toritoribe

2. Do you think the translation given is just incorrect then? It definitely seems to say that you should "replace the indicated portions with the Replacement Phrases" -- which I take to correspond to 入れかえ語句を使って各所を入れかえる -- in two scenarios, namely "in basic model 2" and "in the other applications". To be honest, I can't make much sense of the instruction however it is interpreted, and don't even really understand what "the other applications" refers to ... maybe I'll just forget about this one.

3. So this is the passive of とする (と為る) in the sense "judge/consider as being", right?

2)
Probably "in the other applications" refers to さまざまな場合について.
I interpreted the sentence as Besides that, replace the indicated portions with the replacement phrases for various cases in basic model 2.

3)
Right.
Incidentally, the verb する is almost never written in kanji. 為る is usually used for なる.

Thanks, yeah I'm sure I have never seen する written as 為る, but I was just trying to differentiate this する from any possible homophones...
