How does the JapanReference community feel about revenge? Does an eye for an eye really make it all better? Let's say your ex. girlfriend is furious that you ended your relationship. She has an order of protection put against you, and then proceeds to put herself in your life in an attempt to have you arrested for violating the order of protection. She succeeds in having you temporarily arrested. The court day arrives, and the proof she has is insufficient.

However, she ended up costing you $1,000 in order to get you out of custody on bail, and several weeks of misery and grief. She felt you deserved it due to some deranged thought a mentally ill person like herself holds onto. She considered it revenge.

Would you purposely lie in order to discredit, abuse, or harm someone? Would you take more aggressive actions against the one(s) who you believe acted against you?

I personally would not.

What is this, some kind of moral test to see who here at JREF are the evil ones? :(

Kidding aside, is your question "would I purposely lie in order to discredit, abuse or harm someone" in general, or as an act of revenge? In the former case I definitely would not, but the latter I would be lying if I said I didn't want to. I'd like to think I wouldn't, but it's a pretty big hypothetical and would depend on how bad I got burnt I suppose.

As for your second question, I wouldn't try to escalate the situation by taking more aggressive actions, as in severity if that's what you meant. In terms of revenge in general, I am human and would feel a strong emotion urging me to get personal justice. Whether I would do it or not, like I said, is highly situational.

It depends on the situation, i wouldn't go vendetta over someone who just cheated on me, or deceived me. But if i hear/understand a certain someone incidentally tried to harm/deceive me, it means a challange isn't it ? I can do better.. :) It all depends on the purpose, if it comes naturally, why bother with revenge ? But if its planned..

I hope you understand he means 1000 USD which is 87,700 JPY. i would not consider that a small amount.

Revenge is stupid, I usually just try to show people who want revenge on me that there is no real reason to waste there time on me. Even if they still dislike me, they tend to leave me alone.

I would say don't lower yourself to the level of the ex-girlfriend- if you do that then you have no moral highground to criticize her on. If you're truly in the right, then stay in the right.

Plus courts don't generally give out orders of protection against people for no reason at all, so i would be curious to see the circumstances which that was brought about in- there's always two sides to a story.

Generally speaking though i'm against people taking revenge- it just extends the problem. You hear of gang wars breaking out where people boil down to shooting people because they shot people, and the cycle just never ends, just taking endless lives. Is it all really worth it?

Be the man and step out of the situation and say "no" to all the petty greivences, the b**ching, the revenge, the pride, the angryness etc . Takes more self-discipline & maturity to do this than to take out a petty revenge attack on someone.

The only time I believe in revenge is when someone hurts my family or friends. Hurt me, I don't care. Hurt the ones I care about and its going to be the hard goodbye.

What is there to be gained from revenge? At the very least satisfaction. If the satisfaction outweighs the threat of negative consequences or the consequences themselves, people will be inclined to take revenge. I find that revenge is very satisfying, but it creates antagonism quite often, and antagonism usually endangers individuals, and I sure as hell don't want to be in danger, so if it's revenge do it right. Half-assed foolish **** won't cut it.

Yeah, I know how much $1000US is. Every ones perception is different.

Best revenge is showing that none of their shenanigans are affecting you. That will really piss them off.

I thought you understood it as 1000JPY rather than 1000USD :p

Also I completely agree that the best, and easiest revenge comes from simply ignoring their attempts to annoy you.

Haha, it's a shame my older brother doesn't understand such concepts.

The idea of hurting someone because we had a disagreement or chose to end an relationship sounds immoral to me. How can you look at yourself in the mirror at night when you're doing something to hurt another? I think it's also a little sadistic. I just don't understand the pleasure that comes with doing such things.

Depends on the situation. I hate a girlfriend in 2004 that slept with my best friend and video taped it and sent the tape to me. Now tell me yourself, what was I supposed to do? Sit around, or get some revenge?

Upload it to a streaming porno site?

I didn't even do anything with it. I burned the tape. Then two people tried to beat me up, 'cause my so called "best friend" decided that he doesn't want to have a problem with me... lol

It's not like she killed your dog, Pavel. I wouldn't have done anything in response. Hatred begets hatred, and that's not the way I live. Believe me, it's been tempting to lash out at those who have wronged me. My bipolar brother smacks me around every so often, and I could easily hurt him, but it wouldn't make me feel better, or give me the older brother I want. I've had ex. girlfriends who have gone out of their way to ruin my relationships with mutual friends, and I have not lashed out against them for that. You have to understand that it will not make you feel better, the pain will still be there.

You will persevere, so let them be childish if they so wish it.

I agree with justin's opinion

and if someone did something to hurt me I wouldnt try to do the same but i'll try to fix things if that person was important to me if there was nothing to fix then i'll save it for the time

Revenge when taken, can be sweet. But there has to be a reason for wanting revenge in the first place.

Here in the good old UK, alot of people may waiting for the next general election, in order to get polical revenge by not voting for the Liberal Democrats.

Vengence is mine sayeth the Lord :)

Yeah, about that, isn't revenge all about taking action against someone you believe, or has wronged you? So, to pursue revenge, wouldn't it obviously require that you have such a reason? You're sorta stating the obvious with that.
