In many buddhist schools, the ultimate purpose of buddhist practise is to attain the Way or of attaining Buddhahood. Here is the gist of the practise of Buddhism taught by Nichiren Daishonin in one of his timeless writings(Gosho) " On Attaining Buddhahood in this Lifetime":

"....I F you wish to free yourself from the sufferings of birth and death you have endured since time without beginning and to attain without fail unsurpassed enlightenment in this lifetime, you must perceive the mystic truth that is originally inherent in all living beings. This truth is Myoho-renge-kyo. Chanting Myoho-renge-kyo will therefore enable you to grasp the mystic truth innate in all life.

The Lotus Sutra is the king of sutras, true and correct in both word and principle. Its words are the ultimate reality, and this reality is the Mystic Law (myoho). It is called the Mystic Law because it reveals the principle of the mutually inclusive relationship of a single moment of life and all phenomena. That is why this sutra is the wisdom of all Buddhas.

Life at each moment encompasses the body and mind and the self and environment of all sentient beings in the Ten Worlds as well as all insentient beings in the three thousand realms, including plants, sky, earth, and even the minutest particles of dust. Life at each moment permeates the entire realm of phenomena and is revealed in all phenomena. To be awakened to this principle is itself the mutually inclusive relationship of life at each moment and all phenomena. Nevertheless, even though you chant and believe in

Myoho-renge-kyo, if you think the Law is outside yourself, you are embracing not the Mystic Law but an inferior teaching. ツ"Inferior teachingツ" means those other than this [Lotus] sutra, which are all expedient and provisional. No expedient or provisional teaching leads directly to enlightenment, and without the direct path to enlightenment you cannot attain Buddhahood, even if you practice lifetime after lifetime for countless kalpas. Attaining Buddhahood in this lifetime is then impossible. Therefore, when you chant myoho and recite renge,1 you must summon up deep faith that Myoho-renge-kyo is your life itself.

You must never think that any of the eighty thousand sacred teachings of Shakyamuni Buddha's lifetime or any of the Buddhas and bodhisattvas of the ten directions and three existences are outside yourself. Your practice of the Buddhist teachings will not relieve you of the sufferings of birth and death in the least unless you perceive the true nature of your life. If you seek enlightenment outside yourself, then your performing even ten thousand practices and ten thousand good deeds will be in vain. It is like the case of a poor man who spends night and day counting his neighbor's wealth but gains not even half a coin. That is why the T'ien-t'ai school's commentary states, ツ"Unless

one perceives the nature of one's life, one cannot eradicate one's grave offenses.ツ"2 This passage implies that, unless one perceives the nature of one's life, one's practice will become an endless, painful austerity. Therefore, such students of Buddhism are condemned as non-Buddhist. Great Concentration and Insight states that, although they study Buddhism, their views are no different from those of non-Buddhists.

Whether you chant the Buddha's name,3 recite the sutra, or merely offer flowers and incense, all your virtuous acts will implant benefits and roots of goodness in your life. With this conviction you should strive in faith. The Vimalakirti Sutra states that, when one seeks the Buddhas' emancipation in the minds of ordinary beings, one finds that ordinary beings are the entities of enlightenment, and that the sufferings of birth and death are nirvana. It also states that, if the minds of living beings are impure, their land is also impure, but if their minds are pure, so is their land. There are not two lands, pure or impure in themselves. The difference lies solely in the good or evil of our minds.

It is the same with a Buddha and an ordinary being. When deluded, one is called an ordinary being, but when enlightened, one is called a Buddha. This is similar to a tarnished mirror that will shine like a jewel when polished. A mind now clouded by the illusions of the innate darkness of life is like a tarnished mirror, but when polished. it is sure to become like a clear mirror, reflecting the essential nature of phenomena and the true aspect of reality. Arouse deep faith, and diligently polish your mirror day and night. How should you polish it? Only by chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

What then does myo signify? It is

simply the mysterious nature of our life from moment to moment, which the mind cannot comprehend or words express. When we look into our own mind at any moment, we perceive neither color nor form to verify that it exists. Yet we still cannot say it does not exist, for many differing thoughts continually occur. The mind cannot be considered either to exist or not to exist. Life is indeed an elusive reality that transcends both the words and concepts of existence and nonexistence. It is neither existence nor nonexistence, yet exhibits the qualities of both. It is the mystic entity of the Middle Way that is the ultimate reality. Myo is the name given to the mystic nature of life, and ho, to its manifestations. Renge, which means lotus flower, is used to symbolize the wonder of this Law. If we understand that our life at this moment is myo, then we will also understand that our life at other moments is the Mystic Law.4 This realization is the mystic kyo, or sutra. The Lotus Sutra is the king of sutras, the direct path to enlightenment, for it explains that the entity of our life, which manifests either good or evil at each moment, is in fact the entity of the Mystic Law.

If you chant myoho-renge-kyo with deep faith in this principle, you are certain to attain Buddhahood in this lifetime. That is why the sutra states, ツ"After I have passed into extinction, [one] should accept and uphold this sutra. Such a person assuredly and without doubt will attain the Buddha way.ツ"5 Never doubt in the slightest. Respectfully. Maintain your faith and attain Buddhahood in this lifetime. Nam-myoho-renge-kyo, Nam-myoho-renge-kyo.

Nichiren

Background

This letter was written to Toki Jonin in the seventh year of Kencho (1255), two years after Nichiren Daishonin established his teaching of Nam-myoho-renge-kyo. At the time of this letter, the Daishonin was thirty-four years old and was living in Kamakura, the seat of the military government. Toki was a staunch follower of the Daishonin who lived in Wakamiya in Shimosa Province. He received some thirty letters, including Letter from Sado and one of the major treatises, The Object of Devotion for Observing the Mind. A retainer of Lord Chiba, the constable of Shimosa, Toki had become a follower of the Daishonin around 1254.

Of all his writings from the mids, On Attaining Buddhahood in This Lifetime focuses most clearly on the tenets of the Daishonin's Buddhism;

many of the other works of this period are aimed chiefly at refuting the erroneous doctrines of other schools and discussing theoretical questions. This short essay not only reflects the theories T'ien-t'ai formulated based on the Lotus Sutra, but also reveals the concrete practice for attaining Buddhahoodツ―namely, chanting Nam-myoho-renge-kyoツ―that is missing in T'ient'ai's theoretical framework.

Myoho-renge-kyo is the title of the Lotus Sutra, but to the Daishonin it is much more; it is the essence of the sutra, the revelation of the supreme Law itself. Apparent in this work are both the depth of his thought and his conviction that Nam-myoho-renge-kyo is the only teaching that can lead people to Buddhahood in this lifetime.

if u have questions pertaining to practices and basic principles of Nichiren's Buddhism(also called Lotus school), you can post it here.

In answer to your questions of this thread, as Ashikaga points out it is offtopic, maybe reports such as this might lead me to believe it is a cult.

As for knowing Mr.Ikeda, Know I don't and what has this got to do with him being yet another religious snake oil merchant?
Now how about you answering my question instead of trying to deflect; What is Mr.Ikeda's doctortae in and from which accredited university? In fact what academic qualification has he got?

Do u believe the posts in those websites? It seems that those websites run or paid by the people of Nichiren Shoshu. It shows in the website. To believe such things is unbiased and absurd. I believe u must read this website as well which explores and analyze the negative allegations and fabricated stories in the net media.

Soka Gakkai Controversies Explored - Analysis of Factors Behind Critical Media Coverage

What Is Soka -- Really?

As i have said, Dr. Ikeda never studied in a four-walled classroom, who stop in school because he supported his mento's failed business and in Soka Gakkai. To exchange instead he was taught one in one with his mentor Josei Toda who was a school teacher for over 10 years in various fields such as science, economics, literature, politics, religion, philosopy etc. He was an educator himself realizing the dreams if his predecessors building the Soka Education system from kindergarteen to university. He is also prolific writer and poet and peace activist who contributed to the peace stability in Asia and whole world by strongly supporting the United Nations with his peace proposal every years since 1983. Though never graduated in established japan institution during the post war but his achievements is beyond imagination as an educator, poet, writer and peace ambassador. This is the proof what Soka education that his mentor had taught. This is true education. Hence, he had received more than 270 honorary degrees and professorships out of his great achievements in the fields of peace, culture and education.

Then, by your own words, he is a liar and has no claim to call himself a doctor. Once more you bring up homoury degrees. I have told you before these are not academic qualifications and you cannot call yourself a doctor, now matter how many you have. He is a charlatan using a fake doctorate to try and pretend he is a legitamate educator. There is no way around that, he is a liar, so stop refering to him as Dr.Ikeda because he isn't a doctor and has no claim on that title.

Your site, BTW, is sponsored by Soka Gakkai, which makes it yet another subjective source. Hardly a credible site.
The sites I gave: the first is not sponored by Nichiren Shoshu, I had a look, so you are lying on that one.
The second seems to be a personal account by a member of Nichiren Shoshu, who seems to have had first hand experince of racial discrimaination at the hands of Soka Gakkai.
The third seems to be a site helping victims of your cult and appears to have no connection of Nichiren Shoshu, as you claim. You are either seeing something on those sites that I am missing, or you are emulating your leader, and lying. Which is it?

We'll, he did not claim to be a doctor. Educators around the world give him such a title by those honorary degrees he had received. If u have a problem with these, talk to these universities and educators that they had built their relationship to Soka school system that Dr. Ikeda had founded.

I know those sites long before. Its purpose is just to defame SGI and SGI president Ikeda. The site's i've given tells the lies and slander circulating in internet who were ex-sgi members who were expelled(not victims as u say) from the organization who joined other groups aside from the Nichiren shoshu. For me this case is closed.

Nichiren, I will put it to you quite bluntly what Mycernius has been saying to you with relative politeness for a number of posts in this thread and other ones most probably.

It is idiotic of you to claim that he has become a doctor because 'educators' call him Dr. In fact, your attempt to deflect the blow by referring to a minority view is foolish, desperate and a demonstration of ignorance.

Does he have a degree which would enable him to call himself a doctor? No he doesn't. Does that mean people who call him a doctor are idiots? Evidently. Your educators are idiots and if you want to join them in being one, it is your choice. If you want to save face, drop the Dr.

As for these ill-begotten educators you are speaking about. What the hell is an educator? Sounds to me like they're vermin trying to spread their sugar-coated ideologies and fool the facile into letting go of the last remnants of their sense of reality. We need fewer educators, fewer idiots and more sense of reality. That's what this world needs.

This whole feud between the Nichiren Shoshu and the Soka Gakkai is another retarded waste of time and resources which will lead nowhere. Soka Gakkai is another parasite that spreads madness like the ones before it. A set of arbitrary values and regulations and on top of it is a liar, deified nearly, worshipped and his words accepted without any scrutiny as pearls of wisdom. A claim to be greatly educated is nothing new. It is a typical trick employed by liars to establish their sphere of thought as transcendent viewed from the perspective of the average member and to suppress any critique immediately. Your organisation is nothing more than slaves bereft of defiance. Serve slaves, serve your master. Sickening, your organisation sickens me.

You seem to know the sites u have given were credible for you and u seem to know the persons behind these websites and u were accusing me lying or u were just spreading lies. The sites i gave sokainfoissues are facts and not lies.

The first site u gave are just opinions. Peeople have their own opinions. 2nd and 3rd sites seems to be people involved who were expelled ex-sgi members and Nichiren shoshu group. These are old websites. It seems u have known the people who created this sites. I doubt about it.

we'll, that is your own opinion. But i'd like to quote this from wikipidea:

An honorary degree[1] or a degree honoris causa (Latin: 'for the sake of the honour') is an academic degree for which a university (or other degree-awarding institution) has waived the usual requirements (such as matriculation, residence, study and the passing of examinations). The degree itself is typically a doctorate or, less commonly, a master's degree, and may be awarded to someone who has no prior connection with the institution in question.
Usually the degree is conferred as a way of honoring a distinguished visitor's contributions to a specific field, or to society in general. The university often derives benefits by association with the person in question.

Practical use
Recipients of an honorary doctorate may if they wish adopt the title of "doctor". In many countries, including the United Kingdom, Australia, New Zealand, and the United States, it is now a matter of personal preference should an honorary doctor use the formal title of "doctor", regardless of the background circumstances for the award. Written communications where an honorary doctorate has been awarded may include the letters h.c. after the award to indicate the status.

Notable people using the honorary prefix include:

* Benjamin Franklin, who received an honorary doctorate from the University of St. Andrews in 1759 and the University of Oxford in 1762 for his scientific accomplishments. He thereafter referred to himself as "Doctor Franklin."
* Peter Hollingworth, AC, OBE, Governor-General of Australia from 2001 until 2003, styled himself as "Dr Hollingworth" whilst holding that office. This was one of several controversies attending his tenure as Governor-General, since, although he held six honorary doctorates from Australian universities, it was (and remains) contrary to Australian tradition for the grantee of an honorary doctorate to use the title in public life. If there was any justification for this departure from convention, it lay in the fact that most persons previously appointed to the position already held a formal title - such as a British knighthood or peerage, or a military rank - whereas Hollingworth's previous title, "Most Reverend", derived from his former position as the Anglican Archbishop of Brisbane, and was considered inappropriate for a person holding an official position in a country which maintains a formal separation between Church and State. In any event, the situation was regularised on 21 May 2001, when Hollingworth was awarded the Lambeth degree of Doctor of Letters (DLitt) by the Archbishop of Canterbury, Dr George Carey, in recognition of his research, publications, teaching and achievement in the field of Christian social ethics, social welfare and poverty in Australia and episcopal leadership.[3]
* Billy Graham is regularly addressed as Dr. Graham, though his highest earned degree is a BA in anthropology from Wheaton College.[4]. He holds 20 honorary doctorates and has turned down nearly twice as many.[citation needed]
* Maya Angelou who calls herself and is referred to by many as Dr. Angelou despite holding no undergraduate or advanced (non-honorary) degree.[5]
* The University of Exeter has awarded honorary D.Litt degrees and subsequently referred to the recipients as Doctor.[6]
* Terry Wogan has received an honorary doctorate from the University of Limerick, and refers to himself as "Doctor" on air.
* Judy MacArthur Clark received an honorary doctorate of veterinary medicine and surgery (DVMS) from the University of Glasgow[7], and refers to herself professionally as "Doctor"[8].
* Ralph Stanley, the bluegrass artist, is referred to by many people[citation needed] and refers to himself as "Doctor" after being awarded an honorary Doctorate of Music from Lincoln Memorial University in Harrogate, Tennessee, in 1976.
* Hunter S. Thompson, journalist and creator of Gonzo Journalism, received an honorary doctorate from the Universal Life Church in the late 1960s.[9] Thompson often insisted on the title, as did his alter ego Raoul Duke in Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas who claimed to be a "Doctor of Journalism".
* Stephen Colbert received an honorary doctorate of fine arts from Knox College in 2006. Since then, the credits of The Colbert Report jokingly refer to him as "Dr. Stephen T. Colbert, D.F.A." (which uses both the title "Dr." and a postnominal, which is improper).
* Mirza Ahmad received an honorary Doctor of Laws from Manchester Metropolitan University in 2007. Since then, the credits of every document produced by Birmingham City Council refer to him as "Dr. Mirza Ahmad LLD (hon), MBA., LL.M, Barrister."
* Rachel Carson Received four honorary degrees after her best selling "The Sea Around Us" from: Pennsylvania College for Women; the second from Oberlin College in Oberlin, Ohio; the third from Smith College in Northampton, Massachusetts; and the fourth from Drexel Institute of Technology in Philadelphia.[10]

For the references that Dr. Daisaku Ikeda had received Honorary Doctorate degrees. Please refer this lists of universities: http://www.soka.ac.jp/en/about/founder/honorary.html

I don't see this thread as focused on Nichiren Buddhism. You're focused only your brand of religion that is an offshoot of Nichiren Buddhism and in praising its current leader.

You refuse debate in a discussion board.

This is clearly proselytizing. Thread closed.
