I started seriously studying Japanese a few months ago. Sadly, the only ways of learning the language are some learning programs and a few reading materials. We had a 1-year Japanese language club in our school last year, and although it was fun, we only met once a week. Sad to say, I didn't learn much, but I value the experience. I can read (and write, to an extent) hiragana. I haven't quite mastered the first set of characters yet, and I am still confused with the " and ° that is added to change the consonant sound of the syllable. I am quite proficient with English, and I find the challenge of learning a new language interesting.

I accidentally stumbled upon these forums, and as such, I am deeply interested in learning here. I already know how to switch between input methods (like English Keyboard Input and にほんご Keyboard Input). Forgive my not using Kanji for "nihongo", because I am new to this and I don't have much experience with Katakana/Kanji yet.

If anyone has the time, I would like to request that you talk (type) to me in these forums in Japanese, using ひらがな characters only. I would like to brush up and learn new words, since it was quite some time since I last read and wrote in Japanese. Basic words, phrases, and sentences are most welcome, with the occasional new words. I will try my best to understand. Occasionally, I might have to revert to typing in English if I don't know its Japanese equivalent, so if anyone can, translate them for me. I already have a good grasp of grammar, so it is not hard for me to come up with sentences of my own, based on what I learn.

よろしくおねがいします。

なんぎせんせい、ありがとう! わたしのなまえわ「ぢおん」です。はじめまして。
I can't quite understand everything in your message, but it is a welcome message, as far as I can tell. I could not understand the question in the second paragraph, but I understand it has something to do with the hiragana of my introduction. I would like to request (for now) a translation of that question in English. I would like to know the meaning of the following words which I couldn't understand the exact meaning of in the message above:

ほう、つくって、きょうつう、みつかれば、しやすい

If possible, use them in a different sentence that's easier to understand.

I had to use an online dictionary to get the meanings of some of the words there, without having to pass by a ひらがな to ろまじ converter. I could understand all of the symbols, so I'm kind of proud. :D

ごめなさい, I couldn't speak in Japanese, yet. But I hope to in due time.

Here are some basic phrases that I am attempting to say. Please correct any mistakes I make.
Thank you for your reply. (My attempt is あなたのこたえるをありがとう。 I think I should use a noun form of こたえる, but I don't know what to use. Also, should I finish the sentence with です, います, or anything else?)
My day was nice. (Attempt: わたしのDAYがほほえましいあります。 I don't know the proper word for "day", in the sense of "my experiences in the day", not "day" itself. Also, I was not sure if I should end the sentence with です or あります or anything else.)
I can ______ (I would like to express my ability to do something.)

In the meantime, I will say in English what I can't say (yet) in Japanese. Please help me expand my vocabulary.

わたしはFINISHEDです。ありがとうございます。でわまた。

ぢおん。 (In time, I will write my name in かたかな) :D

"Have a nice day" は 「よい いちにち を」と ほんやく します。

I can ______ ---> わたし は ______ が できます
"I can speak Japanese" は 「わたし は にほんご を はなす こと が できます」に なります。

わたしのなまえ「ぢおん」です
It should be は、not わ。 When used as a particle, は is pronounced as wa. As for why... I have no idea, but it's the first thing we learn in Japanese, since it's part of the most basic sentence structure: "わたしは。。。"

Are you using Jim Breen's WWWJDIC dictionary? Highly recommended by me. Just google wwwjdic (I'm too new a member to be able to add URLS to 3rd party websites here, so no links. Sorry.)

We might as well start on the katakana as well, your name in katakana is ジオン. If you use Windows IME, you can change your letters from katakana to hiragana by just clicking on the underlined letters you have typed out and picking the right option.

しょうかいしましょ、わたし は ネオ です。ことし の しがつ から にじゅうなな さい に なりました。しゅみ は アニメ や まんが など、とくに おもしろい アニメ が だいすき。これでは、じこしょうかい が おわります。

なんぎせんせい さき いってだ、かいわ の わだい を はやく つくりなさい。 わだい を つくったら、かいわ の こと が できます。 (<--- Also an example of "I can do something" sentence structure.)

Sorry, I'm using IME, and I sometimes forget to type "ha" in place of "wa" when using it as a particle. My past Japanese teacher wrote my name in katakana, so I at least know what my name would be in Japanese. ^_^ Thanks for the additional lessons.

わたし は はっぷん 「BY MY PROGRESS」。 わたし も かんじ を べんきょう して です。 わたし は 「私、人、本」 を しる います。 「I WILL START USING THEM FROM NOW ON」。なんぎせんせい、 おじかん を とって いただき、 ありがとう ございます。

私 は ちょびっツ と はがね の れんきんじつ と のだめ カンタービレ が すき です。 私 は マンガ を よんで が できません。 「I HAVE NOT READ AS MUCH MANGA AS MUCH AS I HAVE WATCHED ANIME」。

Sorry for my broken Japanese. I still have a lot to learn.

ヂオン

  • 「A LOT」: a lot of....? If you mean a lot of kanji, かんじ を いっぱい ならいました。 wakarimashita is more akin to "understood" (i.e. concepts, structures, abstract stuff) than knowing/learning.
  • 「BY MY PROGRESS」:By progress, you could probably express it as by my growth/development. じぶん の せいちょう で はっぷん しました。
  • 3rd line is a bit wrong grammatically. You prob mean benkyoushite IMASU, not benkyoushite desu. 4th should shiTTE imasu (te form), not shiru (dict. form) imasu.
  • 「I WILL START USING THEM FROM NOW ON」: これから を つかいます。
  • to and ya: to is a definitive list, while ya is an open-ended list. Personally I watched a lot of anime, so my response would be "ちょびっツ や はがね の れんきんじつ や のだめ カンタービレ など が すきです。" --> Chobits, FMA and Nodame Cantible etc I like
  • 「I HAVE NOT READ AS MUCH MANGA AS MUCH AS I HAVE WATCHED ANIME」 アニメ より まんが の ほう は もっと よめました。 It's a bit broken, but this at least demonstrates the sentence structure.

If you mean "I could understand most of all sentence from NANGI's post", It is "NANGI の かきこみ は ほとんど わかりました" is correct. Or if you mean "I have learnt a lot of Japanese from NANGI's post", It is "NANGI の かきこみ から たくさん の にほんご を おぼえました" is correct."

わたし は にほんご を べんきょう して です
It is not a mistake, but "わたし は にほんご を べんきょう して います" is more natural.

わたし も かんじ を べんきょう して です
"わたし も かんじ を べんきょう して います" or "わたし も かんじ を べんきょう ちゅう です" is correct.

わたし は 「私、人、本」 を しる います
"しる います" is "しって います" correctly. "私" and "人" is very important words! And "人" + "本"= "体". "体" means "body". Why "本:book" means "body"? Because "本" has other meaning, it's a "main". Person's main part is a "body", and "体" means "body".

私 は ちょびっツ と はがね の れんきんじつ と のだめ カンタービレ が すき です

"はがれん"(はがね の れんきん じゅつ し)は、 わたし も だいすき です! アニメ も マンガ も おもしろい! "のだめ カンタービレ" も すき です! "ちょびっツ" は、 アニメ を みた こと が あります。 でも、あまり すき では ありません。ゴメンナサイ。 :p

"I don't read(or watch?) MANGA as much as ANIME" is "わたし は アニメ ほど マンガ を みて いません" is correct

Like I said, I'm sorry for my broken Japanese. With one of our college entrance exams occurring tomorrow, I had to study hard. Sorry, Japanese.

私 は いそがしい いました。私たち の にゅうし は 「TAKEN TOMORROW」 です。 (Our entrance exam will be taken tomorrow).
私 は 「CHEMISTRY、PHYSICS、BIOLOGY、MATH」 をあ @べんきょうして います。 がんばりますよ!

ヂオン

I HAVE NOT READ AS MUCH MANGA AS MUCH AS I HAVE WATCHED ANIME
アニメ(を みる)ほど は マンガ を よんでいま せん。

「I HAVE NOT READ AS MUCH MANGA AS MUCH AS I HAVE WATCHED ANIME」
アニメ より まんが の ほう は もっと よめま した。 It's a bit broken, but this at least demonstrates the sentence structure.
That sentence means "I was able to read manga more than anime." It should be follows.

まんが より アニメ の ほう を もっと みます 。
まんが より アニメ を みる ほう が おおい です。

JFYI,
はがね の れんきんじゅつし is correct.;)

Gracefullyさん、こんにちは。:)
-じゅつ= roughly "the art of"?
そうです。
Right.

芸術[げいじゅつ]/美術[びじゅつ]: (fine) art
技術[ぎじゅつ]: technique/skill

Also, the suffix 師[し] means "a specialist of an art."

教師[きょうし]: teacher
(教[おし]える: "to teach")

医師[いし]: doctor
(医: medicine)

錬金術[れんきんじゅつ]: alchemy
錬金術師[れんきんじゅつし]: alchemist

Toritoribeさん、こんいちは。
げいじゅつ=art, げいじゅつし=artist?
私 は かんじ を よむ こと が できません。Or at least, it's not that well developed yet.

げいじゅつ=art, げいじゅつし=artist?
芸術[げいじゅつ]の場合[ばあい]は芸術家[げいじゅつか]を使[つか]います。英語[えいご]と同[おな]じように、日本語[にほんご]には専門家[せんもんか]を表[あらわ]す接尾辞[せつびじ]がいくつかあります。
As for "artist," 家[か] is used. :) (artist: 芸術家[げいじゅつか]) There are several suffixes for a specialist/professional in Japanese like as "-er," "-or," "-ist" in English.

Translation:
I think "Shi" in English are people we call masters. The most effective method to study kanji is to read lots of kanji. Not to memorize them all in 1 go, but after reading kanji and furigana everyday, you will naturally understand them bit by bit.

おかんこく を とって いただき 、ありがとう。 でも、時間 に かんじ を べんきょうして は も って いません。 (In the last sentence, I was trying to say "I don't have time to study Kanji". 私 は いそがしい に こうとうがっこう です。 ("I am busy with (high) school", although I think this means something like "I am busy in school".)
