quick question

so, to be direct:

猫は車にあります。
猫が車にいます。

Which is it? I thought at first it would have 'imasu' since the 'cat' is annimate,. but then I just thought since it's in the 'car' (an inannimate object), it might be 'arimasu'.

So, could anyone answer this quick questin for me?

Whether or not the location is living or not is kind of irrelevant. After all, can you even imagine a situation where you are talking about one living thing in another living thing? The only use would be talking about pregnancies or perhaps dirtier things....

The cat is what is in, so the verb must follow from that. Therefore, it is the first one that is correct.
I can imagine the case also of animals carrying or being alive inside other animate creatures, definately. But you can just make it as such : ネズミのなかに・ネズミには、虫がいる or ネズミにいる虫です。 etc. Without the need for two いる'ｓ （ｘネズミにいる虫がいる）


必要のある猫が車の中にいます。

車の中にいる猫は、、

あまり気にしないでくださいね。。。

猫 は/が 車の中に います。
The verb corresponds with the subject, a cat, which is a living thing, so you use IMASU. 車にいる is not specific enough regarding the location of the cat in relation to the car. It's better to say 車の中に.
