Oh, I see. In everyday language, then, "God only knows" (also "神様だけご存知だ。" ？）seems to work in a similar way to "Heaven knows" or "God knows" (誰にも分からない） but may be slightly less emphatic or less idiomatic and thus more limited in its use. At least that is my English analogy.

I suppose when you say, in English AND in Japanese, "to know everything", it has the overtone of "to understand it all" especially in this case where no particular subject is given.

I think it can be read either way. That knowing God facilitates the human need to accumulate earthly knowledge OR that knowing God fulfills/completes man's desire for spiritual understanding.

But that's only my opinion.

OK, to indicate "everything" in this sentence what I think it really means is to have a desire for spiritual understanding スピリチュアルを知りたい。Not to have complete and absolute knowledge of every thing in the world. Either way, 知るmakes sense, right ?


スピリチュアルな理解 is not captured in idiomatic English which will often overlap with 知る as part of the same verb "to know." That's all I wanted to point out. :sorry:
