Another year end is almost upon us. What were the best threads, best posts or even funniest posts from 2007? This is sort of like the "Academy Awards" of the JREF Forum (we did this for 2006). What posts or threads are your nominees?
 
If at all possible I would like to nominate the whole Bands and Groups subforum in the "Shame of the Forum" category.
 
@Derfel: What's your problem with the Bands and Groups subforum?

I nominate JREF's Gazette thread. The whole community within it has had a fantastic year of continuously fluctuating conversation and topics, everybody is kept up to date on the band progress, countless new members have joined and contributed to the conversation. Not to mention the endless steams of hilarious posts xD

Or perhaps I don't have sufficient rights to access that part of the topics.
Well, whatever the reason, I've never seen the deep part of it.

That is one thread I will not nominate, having spent the best part of a month, at one point, cleaning it up from pointless posts, off topic subjects and constantly telling members that you do not use threads for chat, we have a chatroom (HINT, as in large massive one). Same goes for the other popular music threads (Alice nine, Miyavi, Antique Cafe). Pain in the backside to moderate, especially when they old music forum was split into the four sub-fora we have now.
 
Where can I post, if I have quite something to say or ask about music, also festivals, in Japan, old AND new (not just the commercial common entertainments, only partly, if so), which is very interesting for many that I know? And I know several musicians in Japan as well and thus about a lot going on there.
This limited present music part gives a very wrong impression about Japan, and thus floods the forum with just one side, sorry to say. Not that I have something against it, but it is not enough, thats all.
 
Well to be honest the music subforum is reserved for that, but It would just get lost amidst the rubbish there, so, I think you could use the chit chat forum if the mods allow it.
 
Last year, Damicci had scored high praise for his recounting of his version of "Meet The Parents." Since we have about a day and a half left for 2007, maybe he can do an epilogue?
 
I have to nominate Love & Relationships for most annoying section.
"The I am X Ethnicity I like Japanese" threads have officially eaten the dead horse.
Epigene, I am also now curious if the finder guy ever got the girl.

EDIT: This year was kind slow for me. Just passed time waiting for her Visa. Next year I'll see what I can do. :) hehehe

The reason for this lack of balance, I think, is because the members that inhabit the music fora are mostly young people who live outside/never lived in Japan whose only access to Japan and its culture is the current Japanese anime/manga boom. The kind of music they listen to originates from music used in Japanese anime soundtrack/theme songs. The "visual-kei" bands they listen to is a niche, even in Japan. So, the average Japanese aren't interested in them either.

The rest of the non-Japanese members don't show any interest in contemporary or traditional Japanese music--at least threads on such themes that are started now and then don't take off.
 
Then it may soon become just a comic of japan-forum. . .but not japanese.

This forum is a "Japan Forum" and not Japanese forum.

Although this is strictly my personal opinion, this is a forum where people with interest in Japan and its culture come together to discuss related issues. This implies that people with such interests are foreign members, and the forum caters to their interests. If they want "visual-kei," so be it.

The few Japanese here are here for specific purposes. Some here are interested in helping people learn the language. Others are here for their own personal agendas. (😊 )
So, it takes a large number of foreign members showing interest in the area to start such a discussion--which I personally would welcome.
 
Honestly, I don't like folk music, be it Japanese, Croatian, English or whatever, but at least those who appreciate folk music usually don't flood and spam their topics with rubbish, so yeah, bring on those topics.
 
The whole Learning Japanese forum gets my vote. At least one knowledgable person, if not more than one, will answer my questions within 24hrs and I am always highly satisfied with the quality of the explanation! Good work fellow JREF Japanese learners!

There is much more than folkmusic, traditionally and at present, although also that theme is interesting.
Also in Japan were and are loads of cooperations with music from around the world, also (with) famous rockmusicians, as much as experimental ones.
Not to mention many fine instruments and their stories, as much appreciated in the west.
And while Japan to my knowledge is the country with the most festivals in the world (there always is one in preparation), there also one can hear many different kinds of music, from rock to folk to court to theatrical plays. It plays a very big role there! And think about all the Taiko-groups going around and the growing workshops with them all around the world. Thats not just folk-music.
Thus it makes me wonder, that the theme has not gotten more attention. I am not a specialist either (although I also managed concerts here), to be honest, but would love to exchange about this.
OK, at given time I will try (I hope to find some audio-or video-examples).

(sorry, this may not be the thread about this, but since the theme music came up, I thought, some may read this)
