I am so happy that I am not famous.
I feel bad for famous people. It is next to impossible for them to have any privacy.
I don't see how it's anyone's business whether he is or is not gay except for Tom and his wife.
I'm with Mikawa Ossan on this:
1. Famous people do not mysteriously forfeit their human rights in exchange for fame - they have the exact same right to privacy as anyone else;
2. Other people's sexual proclivities are nobody's business but their own, period;
3. Unless someone has got some kind of concrete proof of a given assertion about another person, it can only be considered as arbitrary, tabloid-caliber nonsense at best and intentional character assassination at worst.
I often wonder why Cruise was targeted for the wave of mud that's been slung in his direction over the last couple years. Some of it was of his own making - his off-the-wall comment about Brooke Shields and psychiatric drugs, specifically - but most of it is of a viciousness that's all out of proportion with his alleged "offenses."
Q: What person here has not, at some point in his life, fallen in love and felt like shouting it to the world from a mountaintop - or failing that, from a couch-top?
That the "Oprah Incident" is an "incident" at all is more a reflection on the rotten envy of the loveless and embittered than on Cruise, IMO.
As for Scientology, errmm, whatever happened to "tolerance for the beliefs of others?" From what I've learned about Scientology it's at best a useful self-help-psychology method and at worst a manipulative cult along the lines of environmentalism or astrology. I personally have no use for it, but the relentless hatred that's been dumped on Cruise for his beliefs can only be described as bigotry. People would do well to keep Voltaire's "defend to the death" line in mind here, and maybe Jefferson's "it neither picks my pocket nor breaks my leg"...
The only two reasons I give the question the dignity of a response are 1.) my contempt for mob injustice in any form and 2.) a genuine respect for Cruise's talent as an actor and the iconic films he's given us over the years.
Leave the man alone, leave the arbitrary muck-raking to the tabloids, and try to recognize the evil that is envy before you get sucked into crusades based on it. It's the ugliest emotion in the human experience, IMO. Yeek.
