Curry is very popular in Japan, both Indian/south asian varieties as well as the Japanese variation (bullion cubes). Amongst gaijin and nihonjin, which do you prefer?

I like both myself. Japanese curry for me is more of a regular eat-whenever type of meal as time permits (small lunchbowl or easy-to-fix dinner). Not a whole lot of complexity per se. Authentic Indian curry on the other hand with it's rich array of spices and subtle flavors is more of a "dine out at this great place I know" kind of meal. The local Bishnu restaurant near my house has a Raja set for under ¥2000 that will leave you stuffed and unable to finish your meal. The coconut nan they serve is an especially nice treat.

Indian curry is awesome. Masala and vindaloo dishes are fantastic.
Also, Vietnamese food uses a lot of curry. I had an incredible beef stew at this one Vietnamese place near me that was a curry cream sauce. Ridiculously good. I wish I could remember what it was called, but it was off the hook.

I've had Japanese curry, but it just isn't the same.

I'm jealous. The place by me makes a spicy garlic naan, but coconut? A mouthwatering concept.

What, no Thai curry? Thai green curry is really, really awesome.

Indian curry is frankly the best there is, but I also enjoy Japanese curry quite a bit.

I got chicken curry from an Indian restaurant below my house, and I told them, don't worry, I'm cooking my own rice... but they wouldn't let me take it without the rice... maybe they thought I wanted a discount!

Chinese curry is very good! so i can't tell you if my choice is indian or japanese because i never tasted japanese curry before :( so so sorry my vote is blanco

I like both but I find the Japanese one easier to eat in big quantities. Indian curry is too spicy on the stomach.

Well, I just had some excellent Thai green curry and can't think of the other types of curries right now. However, all are quite good. Moreover, lumping Indian curry with Thai and Vietnam curry seems a bit ignorant (kind of like lumping the U.S. and Canada together). Indian even has its own variations because India is a BIG country. Asia is a very diverse place. I recommend that anyone who has an interest in Asia try to explore the differences. I think you'll be rewarded. :-)

As I have never had a japanese curry and I'm not a huge fan of indian curry I can't really vote. Is there a comparison that can be made for japenese curry?

Japanese Curry has a fewer flavour variations than Indian, is usually brown and is a bit thicker and more like a stew. Indian Curry is generally made more from scratch vs. boullion cubes, involves heavier spices and flavouring, has many different variations, but is not as thick in some cases and usually has just one or two items in it which are the central items for which the dish is named.

I prefer Thai green curry (without coconut), but I prefer Indian curry to Japanese. There is not enough complexity to Japanese curry, and while I like it, it is somewhat boring compared to Indian or Thai curries.
