It was painful, but they died pretty quickly,because they had "seconds" or Kaishakunin who, once the samurai did the cut with the tanto (knife) or a wakizashi (dagger) (though if they were to young or "evil" or they just couldn't plunge the knief/dagger in their own stomach they were given a fan or a branche of some kind instead)would cut their heads off (in, hopefully one strike), so they didn't suffer too long. Seppuku is supposed to be a clean, diginifed and honorable act, if the smaurai had shown suffering it would have taken from that, so generally speaking they didn't suffer to long... Still it's a little disturbing~
And I find it kind of sad that Kami had such a fixation on death. And when I think that he wanted to say " Hurry up and die" to himself, I always feel sad...
