Quick question about the てくれる あげる もらう form

So today I bought a present for my friend, but I haven't given it to him yet. Can I still say 今日友達にプレゼントを買ってあげた。? Doesn't this imply that I've already given him the present, as あげた is in the past tense.

What would be the best way to say this? How about 今日友達にプレゼントを買った。 or 今日友達のためにプレゼントを買った。 Or does the latter sentence have "for the sake of" connotations, i.e. it was a bit of a burden for me to do it for him.

Yes, in this case あげる literally "give" - so 買ってあげた means you've already bought AND given it to your friend.

Yes, either will do, they convey the idea that you bought a present, but does not indicate whether you've given it to your friend or not.

Yes, though it might depend on the context.
～ておく is to do something in preparation for a certain purpose.
It will be perfect if used like this:
明日は友だちの誕生日なので、今日出かけた時にプレゼントを買っておきました。
Because tomorrow is my friend's birthday, I bought a present for him when I went out today. (So there'll be no hazzle tomorrow as I've already bought a present and am prepared for tomorrow's birthday party, etc.)

この場合は、「よろしくお願いします」は Please do me a favor, please do as I've requested みたいな意味になるので、Bucko さんが私にやってほしいとは何のかと思っていますよね。
これもあまり親しみを込めた言い方じゃないのかな。。。
目上のような態度を取る感じを受けますよね。
誤解は解けました。

Thanks Elizabeth. Yeah the only reason I wrote よろしくお願いします was because it said that I needed more characters in my message - "はい。覚えておこう！" wasn't enough. I suppose I could have just added more exclamation marks?

はい。わかりました。 「ありがとう」！！！！！！みたいな軽い感じで使えると思います。hehehe
I think I'm going leave out the quotes if that ever happens to me.
It's just a relief for now to find out now I don't have to do anything in particular.

A lesson perhaps that could save someone else embarrassment nevertheless :
友達同士で、急に「よろしくお願いします」と言われたら「何を？」ということになるでしょうね。
