I was wondering if anyone has the home page for checking on jobs with
the military - I thought it was mccs.jobs.com but it is not coming up.
aNYONE? :-)

job on military base

thank you Hachiro😌
I have been thinking of trying to get a job on base, administration or
something, anything which has reasonable hours, finding a p/t job
in japan is so hard.
However, I'm just a civilian and thinking about all the red tape, paperwork
makes me head spin. I'm not even american, I have british nationality.
Muri kana??

send me a IM and tell me what your qualifications are (specialties)...There are a few excellent opportunities for you depending on your education and experience.

Hey Thistle just a friendly comment here, I would take CC1 up on his offer. Drop him a PM and maybe he can help you out.

Best of luck to you mate!

It's so kind of you guys, CC1 and Hachiro~!

I'm looking for a job myself, but Okinawa ....a bit too far...
I'd have to commute by airplane.... :128:

Yeah, thistle, I wish you a very good luck, too! :-)

this is my first post on Jref - I know Cue and Hachiro from another forum. How is it going?

http://jobsearch.usajobs.opm.gov/
here is another useful website
just sort by country, Japan of course, and hit search and most jobs available on bases in Okinawa are there. You can even sort by Job Category if you want. I was looking at this website because I don't know if I want to get out of the military or not yet. I have over a year to think about it.

jobs on military base in okinawa

hi ed-n-okinawa,

the link you posted seems to be for jobs in the US.
I am looking for a job on the base in Okinawa, and ONLY Okinawa,
but thanks anyway.
as you say this seems to be for people who are planning to leave the
military.

you can taylor ed's site to find only the jobs in Okinawa. As far as I know though, it does not list the jobs announced locally.

Have you tried the GS route through the states? There are very few "local" hire GS positions available. IHA/MLC positions are usually filled by people that do not have US Citizenship.

Are you coming here under SOFA status?

actually, I currently have sofa status and stamp in my passport till 2008, I just want to find a job, that could stay in okinawa. im a DoD contractor, and my project has finished last month, so im back in the states, looking for other jobs/careers that could bring me back okinawa. what is the GS website?
thanks again

Ah yes...GS means Goverment Service, and the website would be.....http://jobsearch.usajobs.opm.gov/jo...=3876&ss=0&FedPub=Y&SUBMIT1.x=49&SUBMIT1.y=14

That link is for the current job openings in Okinawa, Japan

thank you much for your help, I will be currently applying for some of those positions.

aloha

For all those interested

I picked up the Okinawa Govt Employment directory yesterday. These sites have plenty of jobs listed if you have the right status. Sadly I do not. I am I regular US Citizen, not on anyone's orders with no military affiliation. So even though I'm qualified for most jobs, its almost impossible to get one here. Good luck to everyone else.

CC1,

May I ask what kind of job are you doing and how you were able to get it? Did you have affiliations with the military/federal system when applying?

I'm currently living in Okinawa and have been looking for jobs on base. Unfortunately, like bbpeanut, I do not meet the requirements for applying since I have no affiliation with the military or government.

It is not that hard...I had no affiliation, and I got a job here.

Yes CC1 I am also curious on this issue. I was in the military for 3.5years and I got out and got a job. That job has recently ended and I have been unemployed for about 6months now. I just cannot find a job on any bases. MCCS do not offer jobs and I cannot go through any of the contracting agencies because I have a tourist visa. Please share the Secret!!!!:-)

Slomo...sorry, but I choose not to say what I am doing, as there are not many jobs like it, and I like having a little bit of anonymity.

1st thing...do you have a skill? Not just your military training, but an actual skill that you can sell yourself with? I had many jobs before the military, and combining those jobs with my military training, I was able to market myself.

2nd thing...be willing to take the lowest job possible. I took an entry level job to get myself in the system, then I parlayed that into something bigger.

3rd thing...remember that you are at the bottom of the hiring agenda. Military spouses with SOFA status are ranked higher than you even if you are more qualified. I know that system sucks, but it is like that for the sake of providing jobs for the spouses who left jobs behind in the US and followed the service members to their assignments. If you have the right qualifications though, someone will eventually see that and pick you up.

Apply for anything and everything...but ensure that you are truly qualified. Don't just apply because you say "I can do that!". If you really don't have the qualifications, you won't make it past the screening process.

Search online for the Job Handbook (I don't have the link right now). It lists the necessary qualifications for any federal jobs. Use that to help you tailor your resume or application.

DO NOT LIE...it may get you to the interview, but you will most likely be found out and then you will have a very hard time seeking employment. Embellish = OK, Lie = NO WAY!

Apply for the jobs no one else wants to do.

If you have specific questions, you can post them here or PM me, and I will try to help.

PS: The links provided above are excellent places to look. Most are updated weekly.

Also check usajobs.gov

Thanks, CC1.

May I ask how long it took you to parlay your entry level job into "something bigger"? Should I be looking out for a particular job status (ie NA, NF, GS, etc)? Would I be eligible to apply for other job opportunities after 3 months?

Sorry for asking so many questions. Again, thanks so much for your help!

Lots of links to follow there. Would anyone have firsthand information on what the teaching scene is like on Okinawa, whether on base or off-base? I'm asking for someone else, not for me. If any of the above links apply, please point them out. If there are other links for off-base teaching work there, please let me know. Thanks, in advance.
