News Aichi Muslim tourist campaign faces protests

A harbinger of more "misconceptions" to come.

Efforts by the Aichi Prefecture Tourist Board to attract more Muslim visitors resulted in fierce protests, with some detractors claiming the initiative resembled an immigration policy. Prefectural officials countered that the project aimed at boosting tourism and carried no religious or cultural bias. The campaign kicked off on 1st October with the slogan "Share Aichi's Charm with the World's Muslims!" It asks people to post on social media about their experiences at local tourist spots and shops, along with information about Muslim-friendly dining options.

The campaign targets residents in Japan who post by year's end, with a budget of 2.65 million yen (roughly $17,500) set aside to award prizes, including accommodation vouchers, to 76 participants.

When announced on the prefectural government's website, protests arose, with complaints and questions including, "It will lead to immigration," "Why only Muslims?" and "The project should be suspended." By noon on Oct. 15, 443 emails and 76 phone calls had been received, with the majority being critical. On social media, posts such as "Aichi Prefecture will be taken over by Muslims if left unchecked" and "I don't think the prefecture must conduct a campaign targeting a specific religion" have been spreading.

What about attracting Hindus/Jains/Baháʼí etc. Why just Muslims?

Muslims are a much larger demographic but it does make one wonder why. Unless they've already made some investment in halal and Muslim friendly infrastructure. Then they may want to attract more visitors who would use them.

Muslims seem to be the people who are the targets for inclusivity here in the West because many ordinary, everyday Muslims are tarred and criticised with the same, faeces-laden brush as those 'infamous' ones whom I shall not mention. Perhaps it's the same sentiment with this initiative.

I do have to add that halal/kosher slaughter is cruel and barbaric. Unfortunately I've had to witness many covertly shot videos of the procedure in order to give my 'professional' opinions on the practise when asked to by PETA. I am haunted by those videos 20 years later…

When halal started becoming a thing in Denmark, I looked into what it meant from an animal welfare perspective. Turns out that in Denmark, the animal is knocked unconscious with a bolt pistol after which it is bled. The only difference from traditional methods is that in halal, the bolt pistol doesn't penetrate the skull which it would do normally.
Personally, I think it sounds pretty humane, all things considered.

The kosher and halal procedures I endured watching were not stunned before their throats were cut, one with a serrated bread knife in a sawing motion to cries of agony and pain and then it was hoisted up by a leg, still struggling and allowed to bleed out. It stopped struggling after an agonising 2 minutes. PETA asked me to assess if it's movements were 'merely reflexes' as the slaughterers/holy men, claimed.

Isn't that because the people doing the butchering aren't actually butchers? Many years ago, I saw a video of someone who made a precision incision in the neck, hitting the carotid artery and the cow just stood there, seemingly not in pain, just bleeding out. It did feel somewhat barbaric but that's butchering in general, I think.

Glad the prefecture didn't back down on this. The confusing of tourism and immigration shows the intellect of the average racist, and the deliberate misrepresentation of a tourist campaign as an immigration campaign on social media highlights the nastiness of people willing to exploit that stupidity.
