So I was recently talking to a few friends, and we got to the point of discussing where we wanted to live when we grew up. I told them I wanted to live around Sannenzaka, or at least in the Nara Prefecture, since it's picturesque and stuff like that. But then one of my friends goes, '"You know, in Japan you're only allowed to have one kid right?'" …What? Can you guys clear this up for me?

I think he was confusing an old policy in China , not Japan. Not sure China even does that anymore. When and if you make it to Japan some day , you may find after a year or two , you really miss the good ol USA. I planned to live there after getting out of the Navy , but after 2 wonderful years there , I was drawn back to Maine and the life I grew up in. Time spent there can be super cool , so don't give up on your dream.

That's what I told him. And yeah, I'll probably miss America, but at least in Japan I wont be yelled at for slurping Ramen.

Totally false. On the contrary Japan's birthrate is down and they want more kids. As Frank said, he's confusing Japan with China which used to have a one-child policy. China still has limits. It was raised to two about 10 years ago and more recently to a max of three.

If you're serious about going to Japan make sure you get a college degree. It's very difficult otherwise. You could also look into taking a mission trip there. I know some Christian groups sponsor such youth or young adult trips.

Thats just some of the places I'm considering. I've considered Kyoto, and I've decided maybe the Nara prefecture would be better. As for the heat in Kyoto… well, I live in Bakersfield, and the average summer temperature is around 85 to 96 degrees here. Heat isn't a big problem for me.

Bakersfield, you have my condolences. Kyoto will seem very nice in comparison.

There's a big difference between 90 degrees at 35% humidity and 90 degrees at 75% humidity.
Anyway in most cases life will dictate where you live unless you're independently wealthy or a digital nomad.

I would probably live in Nara unless I could get my family to agree to somewhere in Hokkaido . I hate the heat and humidity, and I quite like skiing.

Nara is where some family lives and we go there yearly so I am fairly familiar. Osaka is a bit too busy and I really don't care for city life. At this point I would look for remote IT work back in the US that allows for work from other countries (most does not).

Thats true. Our average humidity is around 34%, so that's a big difference.

I marked Nara as a potential place to try to live because the Kii mountains are beautiful during spring

Of course, I didn't put much thought into the tourism around sannenzaka. Thats probably very annoying for people who live around that area, all the tourists who don't know the difference between sushi and sashimi. (Like my family!)

Shiga looks pretty nice, too. Living by Biwa Lake would be pretty amazing.

Hikone or Nagahama would be about my speed. The Otsu end of the lake seems pretty industrialized.
