Tourism Inflation hitting Tokyo Disneyland

If you plan to visit Tokyo Disneyland this year, make it fast. Oriental Land, the park operator, announced Friday that they would increase ticket prices: single-day tickets at peak times will rise to a whopping 10,900 JPY.

The announcement marks the latest sign of inflation in Japan. Goods and services rise nationwide as businesses pay more for energy, materials and workers. Tokyo Disney also announced six-tier pricing, with one-day ticket costs ranging from 7,900 to 10,900 JPY for adults, depending on the crowds and other factors. The current four-tier prices range from 7,900 to 9,400 JPY. Pricing for middle and high school students will also be updated to six tiers, ranging from 6,600 to 9,000 JPY. Children's tickets will remain unchanged at 4,700 to 5,600 JPY. The new maximum price is almost three times the 3,900 JPY admission fee charged when Tokyo Disneyland opened in 1983. Variable pricing was introduced during the pandemic in March 2021 to even out peaks and valleys in crowds.

Other theme parks, such as Universal Studios Japan in Osaka, will raise ticket prices to over 10,000 JPY.

I wonder if this will even dent ticket sales.

It just blows me away how jam packed Disneyland is, the insane length of the lines, the utterly limited amount of things you can do in a full day of being there.

How there is not another Disneyland in this country is beyond me. Divide Tokyo Disneyland attendees between two Disneylands and there would STILL be too many people!

Probably any other country and they would have been ruined for this long ago. If not, the price increases would definitely do it. But not here!

The animations are certainly a great escape from the grind esp. for kids. And I guess people value their escapes so much they can stay escaped in a nicely decorated Hell?

I will say this occasionally, but the human capacity for delusion is simply incredible. Yet, I don't find it surprising....we usually think of dreams as something that happens when we sleep...but the truth is daydreams are constant when awake and actually....its all the same....its just your conscious mind is shut off during sleep so the dreams become your whole reality. And......people don't actually need to be asleep to shut their conscious minds down to a very low level....esp kids. In other words, none of us are completely grounded in reality and some are barely at all.

Back to kids: if its not the kids pushing for Disneyland its the parents feeling obliged.....in my experience at least....and its as much a part of Japanese culture now as Christmas and Hina dolls.....not universal but deeply embedded.

Plus...many never outgrow it all.

Hard to get something if you don't experience it though. Though I have a sneaking suspicion you might not change your mind even if you went.
On the other hand if you took some small children with you, you might see it through their eyes.

Even as a kid, I didn't particularly like the characters (I checked with my mum), despite being an aficionado of other soft toys, so I think I'm unlikely to change!

At this point the "Disney" franchises include Marvel, Star Wars, Pirates of the Caribbean, Indiana Jones. It's no longer just princes, dwarfs and princesses.

That will definitly guide your perception of the place.

So many people were gaga for Disney as kids and that is definitely guiding theirs.

I never really got on the Disney bandwagon either. The Disney Sea part of Tokyo Disneyland was fairly nice, but not worth going more than once for me. In university, we had to write a paper about a legal issue in a class I was in. One of the students said that he wanted to write about Tokyo Disneyland because it was clear fraud to call it such since it is not located in Tokyo in any part.

I wouldn't say I'm on the Disney bandwagon but I've been to several. I visited Tokyo Disney -- my first Disney experience -- in 1994.
Then after I got married and had kids we've been to Disneyland and California Adventure in Anaheim, Tokyo Disney and Disney Sea and all the Disney World parks.
Plus one Disney Cruise and one Halcyon Starcruiser. Though truth be told none of them were my idea.
They were all enjoyable except when the credit card bills came.

Inflation is touching every corner of the globe, and even the Magic Kingdom isn't immune. The rising costs at Tokyo Disneyland have parents and kids alike sighing as ticket prices climb and concessions drain wallets. That's sad actually.
