According to a survey by research company Teikoku Databank Ltd., 6,500 food items will see price hikes in October, among them beer. In the last few days, many consumers went on last-minute purchases, emptying beer shelves.

On the afternoon of Sept. 26, staff at Mega Don Quijote Omori Sanno, a large discount store in Tokyo's Ota Ward, were busy dealing with a flow of shoppers looking for 24-can cases of beer. A woman in her 60s who lives in the neighborhood said she had refrained from buying beer in bulk. "I always buy a six pack of canned beer," she said. But with the price hike coming, she changed her shopping habits and placed a 24-can case of Kirin Ichiban Shibori into her shopping cart. [...] The Don Quijote store in Tokyo started getting ready in the second half of August. Staff put up posters in the liquor section announcing the price hike and encouraged shoppers to fully stock up before October. The store also bundled together two 24-beer cases to entice customers. But some customers filled their carts with five cases, or 120 beer cans.

Higher prices are also expected for dining out, taking out non-life insurance policies and receiving electricity.

The alcohol hikes this month will likely deal another blow to bars and liquor stores. The price of alcoholic beverages increased by 4 to 13 per cent, including the first canned beer price rise in 14 years. Japan's four major brewers -- Asahi Breweries Ltd., Kirin Holdings Co., Suntory Holdings Ltd., and Sapporo Breweries Ltd. -- and many other smaller outfits have upped asking prices on beverages over increasing input costs as inflation rises in Japan.

The price hikes so far in 2022 would cost the average household an extra 70,000 yen ($483) annually if they made the same purchases, a separate Teikoku Databank estimate suggests. Asahi was the first to promise rises of 7 to 17 percent on 162 products in April, which means a 350 milliliter can of Asahi Super Dry at a convenience store has gone from roughly 219 yen to about 230 to 240 yen. The three other big alcohol firms followed suit, as did smaller companies like Yoho Brewing Co., maker of the Yona Yona Pale Ale brand, which slapped 10 percent hikes on almost all of its products, and sake brewers such as Hakutsuru Sake Brewing Co., 150 of whose products are now 5 to 10 percent costlier. But with consumers set to feel the pinch, a survey by Kaku Labo, the market research arm of alcohol seller Kakuyasu, shows drinkers are split on whether they will cut back in response. In the September survey, 30.5 percent of the 525 respondents said they intend to save on alcohol, while 37.3 percent reported they intend to maintain their habits. Another 29.1 percent said they would decide once the changes come.

Glad I don't smoke or drink with high prices here in the US. Gives me more money for guns & ammo , LOL.

I just checked out the price for the low cost of beer, large can size. Wow!What a price increase. Now 227 yen include tax. Luckily, I think one type of beer made in Korea is still 122yen for large can. Food prices continue to rise. Cut chicken went up 10 yen to 68 yen per 100 grams. This is at Cosmos . I don't know how it is in your area, but around 6 pm on Saturday night, the meat section one can find stuff from 30 to 50% off. Good time to buy pork or ground chicken. Beef I don't buy so I don't know the prices. Also your noodles can be bought very cheap also.

As beer rose in price, I will buy Hoppy(drink) from now on.
Hoppy is beer cooling drinks (with soda kind of the beerlike beverage)
which Hoppy beverage (old Kokuka drink) released in 1948 (Showa 23).

(It is not a drug abuser.)
It's a nice drink. I often have it when I'm working and want a beerlike taste but need to concentrate.

That looks similar to a winecooler in alcohol levels. Is it the same sort of thing?
