Were French people the Gauls?

The Gauls formed the original Celtic population of what would later become France. Back in my childhood, there was no Wikipedia. We learned our Gallic history here:

In the Bretagne, they speak a Celtic dialect to this day: Breton.

That's correct - partly. The "Romans" or "Italics" were ethnically very diverse and mixed with Etruscans, Celts, Greeks, and later Visigoths, Ostrogoths, Langobards, Muslim conquerors, Normans, etc. The modern Italian language has its roots in Latin but the modern Italians are of very heterogeneous origin.
