Hi

1. 「そのことは、一応先生にも話すだけは話したほうがいいと思います」

a) I don't really understand the structure of this sentence. Could it mean "I think you should at least talk to the teacher too about this" (i.e., even if you don't talk to anyone else, you should talk to the teacher)?

b) Does も mean you should talk to the teacher as well as talking to me?

2. This is part of an explanation of ~なりに:

「~ができる範囲で」という意味。その人(物)ができること、 能力は人(物)によって違うが、どの程度があってもプラスに評価して述べる表現。

To me this looks like: "(~なりに) means '~ is within the bounds of possibility. ....??? ... (~なりに is) an expression stating that ability varies depending on the person (thing), but any degree (of ability) is valued as a positive thing."

a) What is the purpose of で in ~ができる範囲で?

b) How does その人(物)ができること fit into the sentence? I don't see the grammatical connection with the rest of it. Edited: Oh, is it a joint subject of 違う with 能力?

c) In any case, what does any of this have to do with the actual meaning of ~なりに, which according to the dictionary is "in one's own way or style"?

3.
「いくつ買ってくればいいですか。」
「とにかくたくさん必要だから、その1万円で___だけ____。」

(The student is supposed to fill in the blanks.)

a) In the first sentence, who is doing what for whom? Does it mean "How many should I get (for you)?" I forget now whether the speaker can be the subject of くれる.

b) Does the second sentence essentially mean "I need lots, so get as many as you can for 1万円"? Is it expecting a completion using できるだけ?

4. 親が子供を放って遊びに行ってしまった。

a) Is 親 the subject of 遊びに行ってしまった? I only ask because it's something I would associate more with children.

b) Also, in what exact sense is 放って meant?

1) a)
~するだけは~したほうがいい is a set phrase, meaning "it's better at least to do/you should at least do". A similar expression 話だけはしたほうがいい makes sense, maybe?

だけ modifies "to talk", not teacher, so it doesn't connote "even if you don't talk to anyone else". See the difference between 先生にだけは話したほうがいい and 先生にも話だけはしたほうがいい.

b)
Yes.

2)
どの程度あっても?

a)
by/within

b)
It's more likely "rephrasing"; その人(物)ができること, i.e. 能力.

c)
What the writer wanted to emphasize would be プラスに評価して述べる. For instance, 彼なりにやり遂げた does not just mean "He completed it in his own way/style", but also connotes "even if his way is not like what expected, further, even if his way is worse than the way others usually do, the speaker values it positively". In fact, なりに sometimes has this "worse-than-the-way-others-usually-do" nuance.

3) a)
Your translation "How many should I get (for you/us)?" is correct, but 買ってくれば is from 買って来る.

-ba conditional
くる --> くれば
くれる --> くれれば

b)
できるだけ is not incorrect, but in the form 1万円で___だけ____, it's common to interpret で is used as a particle here. できる is a single word, not "で + きる". What the questioner expected is その1万円で買えるだけ買ってきて, for instance.

4) a)
Yes, the parents went out having fun.

b)
leave their child home alone (without taking care of him/her)

Thank you,

どの程度あっても?
Yes, sorry.

くる --> くれば
くれる --> くれれば
Ooops, yeah. For interest, would くれれば work there?

Thanks, yeah, I realise that ... I was thinking of a completion like 1万円で・・・できるだけ since I wasn't alert to the fact that 買えるだけ would work. Is 買えるだけ essentially the same pattern / same kind of meaning as できるだけ?

For interest, would くれれば work there?
No, it doesn't.

Is 買えるだけ essentially the same pattern / same kind of meaning as できるだけ?
その1万円でできるだけ買ってきて can have the same meaning, but since できるだけ is usually used as an idiom "if possible", it can be interpreted as できるだけその1万円で買ってきて "less than ten thousand yen, if possible", connoting "it's acceptable to pay (a little) more than ten thousand yen, if it's really necessary".

Thanks, is the reason くれれば doesn't work because the speaker cannot be the subject of くれる?

Also, I meant to ask .... is it possible for 「~ができる範囲で」 to be a complete sentence, ending in で like that?

Yes, except an insulting usage such like ぶっ殺してくれるわ!(= ぶっ殺してやるわ!). This usage is a bit oldish, though.

いくつ買ってくれればいいですか means "How many should the person (who is obvious from the context) get for you/us?", i.e., the buyer is third person.

Also, I meant to ask .... is it possible for 「~ができる範囲で」 to be a complete sentence, ending in で like that?
No. it's an adverbial phrase, as same as ~なりに.
