The Japanese photographer Okada Atsushi presents one of Japan's most remote islands, Yururi, just off the coast of Nemuro, Hokkaido , in his photographs, films, and a website now available in English.
The island has long been shrouded in mystery, as access to the island is strictly limited. Not only a vital breeding ground for northern seabirds, but Yururi is also home to wild horses from European countries, such as the Percheron horse from France. The new website displays Mr Okada's photographs of the island, which will be published in a book in 2023.
Okada Atsushi was born 1979 in Hokkaido, Japan. He graduated from the Department of Photography, Faculty of Art, Osaka University of Arts 2003 and received his doctorate (Art) from the Graduate School of Arts, Tokyo Polytechnic University, in 2008. The same year, he won the Kimura Ihei Award, also known as the "Akutagawa Prize of the photography world." He has also won the Hokkaido Cultural Encouragement Award, the Higashikawa Awards Special Photographer Award, and the Fuji Photo Salon New Face Award. His published works include "I am" (AKAAKA Art Publishing, 2007), "ataraxia" (Seigensha Art Publishing, 2010), "THE WORLD" (AKAAKA Art Publishing, 2012), "MOTHER" (Hakurosha, 2014) and "Yasuda Shota Photo Collection: LIFE IS" (Magazine House, 2020). His works are in the public collections of the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art, the Kawasaki City Museum and the Higashikawa Bunka Gallery. He has been photographing Yururi Island since 2011.

Yururi (ユルリ) is an uninhabited island off the coast of Nemuro Peninsula, Hokkaido. The island is full of natural miracles and magic. The website presents the island's history, biology, and geography and a film by Okada Atsushi, who has been filming the wild horses inhabiting the island since 2011.
