Yen and Dollars...

im just wondering...

if there is 1 dollar, how much yen is there?

or...if there is 100 yen how many dollars is there?

i just want to to know the value of yen...like what amount is expensive or not...

well, i wouldn't know. i came from troubled country with low standard, so for me, in Japan, everything was expensive. and Japanese people are thrilled here in my city how cheap it it everything. so it depends. btw, love your avatar! konnichiwa!

it's all money, and the value of the yen actually fluctuates in reference to the dollar. In general, a single yen is worth a little less than a penny, so think of prices in yen as if all of our prices were in pennies instead of dollars.

100 yen ~= 100 pennies = 1 dollar

10,000 yen is about 100 dollars, and depending on how you spend it, will go about as far.

I think I understand what you mean. It's not as if 10,000 yen is going to buy you a cheap car or anything. It will buy you 4-5 CDs, or 15-20 budget-priced lunches, 20 hours in a manga cafe, three massages in Harajuku, etc.

The system I generally use: if I see an item costing 2,000 yen, I'll remove the comma a add a period two digits from the right like so...20.00. Then I figure the item is roughly $20.00 US, although you have to shave a bit off for the current exchange rate.

All this advice to just assume a dollar equals 100 yen seems a tad askew to me. The rate right now is an additional 17% above that. True, it may not seem much when buying a soda, but when something legitimately expensive comes along, it's nice to be able to call up some basic math skills. I, perhaps erroneously, think enough of people to assume they can take a number and break it down by 120.

Then again, maybe I'm just a tightwad, and have to know how much money I spend.

One of the things I like about Japan is that it broke me off from drinking all that carbonated sugar-water!

I had a friend some time ago who was very strict about doing the conversions from yen to USD and vice versa. I never was. For general use, 100 yen = 1 USD is indeed fine, but as you get into larger and larger sums of money, it does indeed make a difference.

Last I heard was that 1 USD was 117 yen. I hope that it gets to be an even better exchange rate before May. Something like 1 USD = 1 yen. A dream? Yes. But I'll be on a budget when I go to the US! I need all the help I can get!

Is the KitKat a drink? I've seen it in machines (on those rare, rare times when one sees a Nestle drink machine) and was under the impression it was KitKat bar(s) packaged in cans so a drink machine could handle them.

That is one of the many, many things I liked about Japan, too. Before I left for my two weeks in Tokyo, I was drinking, no exaggeration, about a gallon and a half of Diet Coke every day. By the time I got back, I was down to about 24oz a day and am now at 0-20oz, depending on how I feel, meaning I'm finally not addicted after some 20 years.
