Can someone plz name for me some LARGE JAPANESE gangs/crime syndicates? If possible, could somebody please specify which gangs are rivals of which, which are allies and etc. Thanks yall.

Use the web. am sure you can your answer.

its not like anyone here is OR wants to be a member of them....... :D

That kind of information could be useful for making a good book...
Sorry I know nothing about it Gelo =\

Hey Onigiri Chan, that is actually sort of what I wanted to know this info for! Actually, I am writing a film script/screenplay, and first I want to think up a story, and I thought I could make something out of Japanese crime syndicates.

LOL it's pretty funny, you almost read my mind.

Anyway, I have tried to search but can't find any sites that tell me a list of gangs, and/or any that are rivals, or allies. Yeh, maybe I'm a bit stupid...Could someone direct me to a URL plz? :?

I'll say it straight up.

Please read some books from Don Pendleton.
His books are great, but there is one thing you have to know if you're going to use XY-gumi's name or whatever. There are consequences, who knows, they may even pay you a visit or two.

Personally, if you haven't even been to Japan, maybe writing literature in a fiction book that is not "vraisemblable" to use the french term... has no basis in reality besides using a few names of people and places (which you barely know about) is bad. Good fiction feels real. Unless we're talking sci-fi or fantasy. And then you have to avoid the Dragon-Ball-esque cliches.

If this is for a serious effort at a script, then surely you intend to educate yourself on the topic beyond just the names of some gangs and which ones are rivals, don't you?

Look I know what I am doing, I have a trip to Japan set out. I just thought maybe there was some good info on the net about the subject. And this script is not entirely serious anyway, I am trying to get a feel into a screenwriting process. I will probably fix it up after its finished and when I am older.

That's a relief. As an exercise, it sounds perfectly fine. I once translated a Japanese novel for much the same reasons. Sort of just for the hell of it, to see if I could do it or not. I learned a lot in the process. The chief thing I learned is that I do not care to tackle translation as a means of making a living.

Until you get some names you like, just make up however many you need. You can always go back and use the "replace" function in your word processor to fix it up.

EXACTLY!

Well, anyway, I've been looking on the net, searching about what rivals the Yakuza have, and I haven't found any. Is there ANY gang/organised crime syndicate, that rivals with the Yakuza? I am sort of looking for a group, not just rival individuals.

Well i have a idea.
What about the Triads? (chinese mafia).
Their the only other gang that i think would rival the Yakuza.

I'am not sure if Korea has a mafia of its own?

I say triads cause they are close to each other and so on.

The only problem is, the Yakuza doesn't have the ability to run their organisations the same way as they did years ago. Hel, they've already helped sink Japan into economic disaster, what more do they need to do?

It's gonna be hard to try and get a lot of material on them. You can, if you want to, look for a book called Yakuza Diary. It is a little old, but it's a good read. An American had stayed with a group of Yakuza for awhile and written about the experiences.

That's very interesting! I might have to pick up that book myself, actually.
Which novel did you translate, Mike?

Heh, I remember that the Japanese title was ファザーファッカー. Don't remember the English title, though. That kind of thing just sticks out to me (i.e. the Japanese title).

Well then what kinds of things would the Triads and Yakuza fight over? Is there Triads in Japan...more specifically Tokyo? I want to set my script in modern day Tokyo city...
