Working for an American company in Japan

Hello everyone,

it is me again.

I will face a job interview with an American company this week. It is based in Texas and they have branches in all over the globe. It is an engineering position by the way. I am living in Japan with a spouse visa, so I think the visa thing is not a big deal.

I would like to know does anybody have experience working for an American company in Japan? What are the work conditions usually (agreement under American law or a local (Japanese) agreement)? I know that is a special question and it varies from case to case.

Live in Japan. Follow Japanese laws. Pretty simple concept. As for any company customs that don't apply, follow them.

It really depends on the company. My (Japanese) partner has a management position at an American company here in Japan and the corporate culture is quite different to the typical Japanese way of doing things. No pressure to stay until your boss goes home, no socialization pressure and usually home by a decent hour. They get Japanese public holidays and Japanese bonus system (3 times a year). Company offers private health insurance and pension. But it just depends on the company I guess. I have friends in other American companies that get Japanese and some American holidays such as time off for Thanksgiving, etc. No harm in asking about the corporate culture.
