"recently it has been particularly difficult to balance work and life"は日本語にしみました．

最近仕事と生活を平衡することが特に難しいでした。

これで意味は通じますか

Try using プライベート and バランスする.

I think you could say that "work life balance" has worked its way into the Japanese lexicon as foreign loan words. So

ワークライフバランスが難しく（厳しく）なってきています 。
or
ワークライフバランスを保つのが難しくなってきています。
or
ワークライフバランスを実現するのが難しくなってきていま す。

If you are determined to avoid katakana, you could probably say something like
仕事と家庭の調和が難しくなっています
but I think the katakana works better.

(You could also do as Mike suggested, and that would be equally understandable).

No I'm not particularly worried about not using katakana, I was just wondering what would sound more natural in a casual conversation.

So if
最近仕事とプライベートをバランスすることが特に難しいでした。 Sounds natural that would be great.

If it is ongoing, です,

難しいでした is wrong. 難しい is an i-adjective.
バランスする is often used as an intransitive and a non-volitional verb. バランスさせる would be more appropriate for the example sentence, I think.
～と…のバランスを取る is another option.
