Who here is willing to get married to anyone even if its someone you dont like,
just to get a visa to stay in Japan.
I mean some might say "your selling your soul, when you get married" but surely you could get married and just not have much contact with your estranged wife, or something alike.

I would get married to get a visa, any offers?

Not again. Reminds me of those times of Filipinas marrying Americans so they could get their green cards... Not to mention those mail-to-order brides... It's quite nauseating when you make a ***** out of yourself just to get a green card...

As much as I'd like to stay in Japan, I would never do anything like that. Plus I'm sure it's not very easy to pull off..
My cousin married a Taiwanese woman (for genuine reasons ) and she had to spend a certain amount of time (I forgot exactly how much) outside of Australia before she could move here.. Or something like that.. I'm not clear on the details, as usual

I used to be in the U.S. Navy and visited Olongapo many, many times.

After viewing the conditions in which many people live(d) there, many of my friends were agreed that whoring themselves to escape that poverty and squalor was perfectly understandable and that we did not and would not look down upon them.

I couldn't be with someone I was using like that - it's wrong.
For me, love is the only reason to get married.
If it became apparent that my (hypothetical!) wife was just after access to my country , I would just die.
I suppose some people might look for someone in another country as an escape from a really bad situation in their own country - eg poverty, war, violence, but it is still a bad move unless you know someone properly and actually want to be with them.
I think if you marry someone you don't love you are asking for trouble.

I don't think it's prostitution. It's just business. People get paid to marry someone to get a visa. I suppose that homosexuals are prime targets as there would be no sex involved in the fake marriage and that may give them a cover of "normality" in countries or milieux where it's still frowned upon.

I DEF would not do that. Some people are desperate tho to do those sorts of things, but ehhhh... wouldn't you rather marry someone you love versus someone you don't even like and might end up killing? (not in the literal sense)
 
I don't really think it's as big a deal as some people think it is... I don't think that marriage is as hallowed and auspicious as some people would believe... that's just me though.
 
To someone I didn't like? no.

But I'll put it this way:
I don't ever want to get married... getting to stay in Japan with the person I loved would be the only exception.

Double-win. Get to stay in Japan, get to stay with the person you love.

So if you break it down to the nitty-gritty then yes, I would marry to get the visa.
 
The only way I would do that is if I was really good friends with a Japanese lesbian couple and one of them is willing to get married to me so that I can get a visa LOL! Joking! No really I wouldn't have it in me to do something like that just to stay in a country. Getting married is no joke even if you do find the one you love, you have to have at least 500,000 yen minimum a month income to support a small family.

Most J-girls are happy in their first year of marriage to their fantasy foreign husband but that fantasy wears off when she realizes her fantasy husband isnt so special because he still works at Nova making only 300,000 yen a month. And then reality kicks in and then there is the divorce. Ive seen it happen and heard of it happening many times.
 
I wouldn't....I would only marry because of LOVE.....
 

You are a resident of the UK are you not ? You can go anywhere and most likely live anywhere in the EU and other parts of the world if you wish, and you would go through all the trouble of a fake marriage to stay in Japan ?
People die daily crossing the sea illegally from North Africa to come to Spain and then to make it to countries like the UK. You don't appreciate how good you have it. I hope you are just kidding or just got a stroke of weirdness.

And anyways what do they have in Japan that's better than in the UK ?
I never get this, people from developed countries, EU, Australia, US, etc etc trying to quit and go to Japan because things there are so much better and what not, I mean sure if you like Japan there is an affinity there, but I don't get the part of going all out just to end up after many wasted sacrifices and what not to stay in Japan when one could have chaneled all that effort in his/her home nation and be in a better situation then a visa holder out in the streets of Japan.

The point is, you don't have to live with the person you marry to get a visa. Usually people who do that hardly see each other again once it's done (except if they are friends - remember the episode of Friends with Phoebe's gay husband ?).

But you have to admit that life is cheaper in Japan than in the UK. Especially accommodation. So maybe it's a reverse trend of people fleeing their home country because it has got too expensive.

No frankly, there is little better in Japan than in the UK. I've just come back from England and couldn't help wonder how there could be such an enormous difference of architectural beauty between two countries. Walking around central London, Oxford or Bath, then going back to Japan it's such a shock. They really should do something about urban developement in Japan. But if you come from the Midlands, then Japan is not so bad. Then one could say that Japan beats the UK on food, but I have rarely eaten so well as in England (I just avoided British food, as most people do). As for the convenience, the Tube is very similar to the Chikatetsu, and it is now as easy to find a supermarket in London as a combini in Tokyo (no need to say that there is much more in supermarkets, except that you can't pay your bills there, but they also have ATM's in Britain).
 
Well, I wouldn't do this! and in my opinion, this is so not right! You know, there are lots of women that come from China want to marry to Singapore. And some of them always commit a crime, like cheating money from old men, something like this. And the Singaporean dramas always like to put some stories about China women cheating people for money, and having the urge to marry some old men to get a PR. Or they have come from the China by marrying Singaporean men. I think they might illustrate something sick of China women. But i think it's because there are really too much cases like this.
 
Marry someone to get a visa. Hmmmm, tempting but my current wife may have something to say about that.

I agree very much with Duo and Mikecash about people idolising Japan. Of course, every place has good and bad points. Happiness is something you carry round within you, not something that you chase around the globe.

But, slightly offtopic I would like to ask a question (I'm sorry if it sounds stupid ) but... is it possible, do you think, that a Japanese man might want to marry a European woman as a kind of 'easy access to Europe' utilitarian thing? Well, I realise that every person is different and some people might do such thing, whereas others don't... but I wondered what people think is the likelihood/possibility (not sure of the right word).

You are probably all thinking: what?!?!? :sorry: It is a purely hypothetical question, like the original. It is just, at the moment I am living in England and there are many cases where people from other countries want to marry person from here specifically. I thought it unlikely that this would exist much from Japan (after all, people not fleeing persecution or anything), but still had some curiosity...

And in answer to OP: no. However, I might marry someone for their money and then get rid of them. Not that I'm advocating anything illegal, of course...
 
Coming back to the which is better discussion, I've just written a review called London vs Tokyo. For the whole countries, you can have a look around my England Guide and Japan Guide (or basically this website). Contrarily to some idealists, I know both countries quite well and can compare.
 

You haven't got Stoke-on-Trent (where I live) in your guide, shame on you! But I will forgive you as you have included Glastonbury (where I would rather live)
