Why do we pay double for Shinkansen?

I took shinkansen to Nagoya the other day for interview.
It's clearly said that the price is 4,900 en for each trip.
I bought an en-route ticken an they charge me 19,990 en.
I ask the girl at the counter, she explain in the Japanese I couldn't understand.
Does anyone here knows why we have to pay double?

Define 'enroute' ticket... was it normal or green car? Was it reserved or normal? Was that return? Nozomi or Hiari? Oneway or Return?

Lots and lots of variables, sounds like they gave you the best

Yeah, its X amount for the fare than X again surcharges, whee.

Great system isnt it? (still sounds like they slogged you with a nozomi peak season unreserved Green-car premium return ticket, the whole works)

Sounds like what can happen to a fellow if he stands at the ticket window and says 窶堙坂?堋｢ a lot.

Basically, you pay the "fare" for the trip, then pay a surcharge for using an "express" train (the Shinkansen). It is the way it is. You can take any of other lines, but they will take longer and will be more "in-direct". If are not specific on what you want, they'll sell the "easiest" for the consumer. I have never been offered the Nozomi, it always seemed more money for little extra.
