Does anyone know why in Japanese they will use Katakana for like 2 mora and then Kanji immediately afterward?

Japanese has three main writing systems, that often all appear together in a sentence. This may seem confusing at first, but when you get used to it, the choice of script immediately reveals the structure of a sentence and the words that carry meaning, and actually makes it easier to read. The context is also very important, as it may affect the vocabulary used. Katakana is most commonly used for foreign loan-words, like ロケーション; there are Japanese words that mean "location," but the shortened version ロケ, as in your example, references filming a movie or show. ロケ地 is more specifically a site used for filming a particular scene.

真鶴のロケ地を巡る means "going around/visiting the "filming locations" in Manazuru," because many different things have been filmed there. This is why I say "context is very important."


Sometimes katakana can also be used for sound effects or for emphasis, as to your second question. For the third, I feel that's been covered elsewhere a lot and can be a big topic, so I'll leave you to do a little research for yourself.

When they use it for Japanese words that are normally written in hiragana or kanji, it's for emphasis similar to how italics or bold are used.

I think it's totally fine. That's how it works when we learn our native language as well. We don't obsessively parse every phrase down to the last drop.

Very true very true. Sometimes I struggle with the ambiguity thing because I feel like I'm not accomplishing anything, but then I remember that solid input IS accomplishing something!
