Which particle to use with 通る

Hi all, i was wondering if we were to say "to pass an exam", should we use the particle に or を, which would be appropriate?:

1) 試験を通ったの?
2) 試験に通ったの?

Usage of を particle marking "locations"

does it mean that both 試験を通った and 試験に通った are both acceptable?

Yes, but a subtle difference exists betweem them, as same as ～に/を登る, ～で/を泳ぐ.
