What pets are most common/popular in Japan?

I've wondered about this as I know that people generally have less living space in Japan than in the United States. I would imagine that dogs aren't as popular with no back yard for them to run around in (at least not the larger dogs). What about other animals? I do see a LOT of japanese aquarium websites, so I imagine aquariums are popular. There also seems to be a fascination with cats in Japan. Are they common pets? What about hamsters, gerbils, rabbits... etc.? Maybe lots of people don't keep pets at all?

Actually, I saw quite a few dogs when I was there. It's not uncommon to see even fairly large dogs, but I'd guess most were smaller, around the toy size. The cats I saw were all homeless, and I never saw any smaller pets. Then again, I rarely went into actual homes, most of my friends were apartment dwelling college students.

Bugs, and Dogs... I've seen a cat here and there, but, I HEAR the dogs in my neighborhood non-stop.

I keep two dogs.
Border Collie and a mongrel dog
Parents keep killifish.
One cat comes to a house to sometimes eat bait.
Nephews (a primary schoolchild) keep a crawfish

Dogs and cats definately....

The house behind me has a rooster and a hen locked up in a cage attached the outside of their house. Damn bird goes off like clockwork every morning. I swear, one of these days the owners will be shocked and dismayed when they find out their precious little noisemaker has mysteriously dissapeared...

A lot of people have pets these days--people say there is a "pet boom" under way. I think a lot of people in the big cities have cats, because they don't have to be let out of the house or apartment--otherwise, they may have turtles, lizards or snakes... (No joking, there are reptile and amphibian lovers...)

Dog lovers choose small dogs like Chihuahua, mini-sized dachshund (I don't know the real name for that variety:sorry: ) and Yorkshire terriers. In my neighborhood, however, I see a lot of magnificent dogs like Dalmatians, Greyhounds, and Afghans, because our area is adjacent to the "homes of the stars and the rich."

I just hope Iron Chef-san check out the birds before you get your hands on them... They may be "Ukokkei"（鳥骨鶏）-- their eggs can sell at 200+ yen each.
