The reason why 僕はまっすぐな人生を歩んでいった sounds odd is that 人生を歩む is usually talking about their lives so far/until now, and the way of living life doesn't change easily. In other words, 人生を歩んでいった can be valid in a specific context.
e.g.
先生のおかげで、僕はしばらくはまっすぐな人生を歩んでいった / いけた。しかしその後彼に出会って、また歪んだ人生に戻ってしまった。
In the example above, 僕 had lived a straight life from the reference time until when 僕 met 彼, not until now, so 僕は人生を歩んでいった is valid.
Incidentally, there is no problem to use ～ていった for the speaker in other cases than such like 人生を歩んでいった.
e.g.
アメリカに留学してから、僕は英語がどんどん上達していった。
(The speaker looked back over his past experience.)
