Well the last time I played the game was about two years ago plus I got about half of the way through before I had to take it back because it was a rental. From what I could remember of it the reasons for me liking it are simple:

-It was fun.
-It was funny.
-I enjoyed the voice acting.
-I'm an old school RPGer so the nostalga was nice.
-I liked the story.
-The controls were tight.
-I liked the overall flow and feel of the gameplay.

That is the reason why I like it. You know I have Grandia, but never played it. I have had it for two years as well, but never got around to playing it. I will admit Grandia Xtreme was utter crap. I did not even need to play it to find that out. My best friend still will not stop bitching about how horrid the gameplay was, and trust me if my friend hates a particular game then it must be bad because he is not the type of guy who hates on games very often. I am actually interested in seeing how Grandia III plays out, but considering I have lost faith and respect in Square since Final Fantasy VIII I am not going to hold my breath on this one.

Final Fantasy VIII = Crap
Final Fantasy IX = Crap
Final Fantasy X = Crap
Final Fantasy XI = Uber Crap
Final Fantasy XII = Still waiting on the verdict on this one.



Let's see Tactics was good, Brave Fencer Musashi was good, Parasite Eve 1 & 2 were good, and Star Ocean was good. That's about it. The FF series has taken a nose dive IMHO ever since FF VII because of the BOD (board of directors). Hey at least they brought back all the original development team members for the movie FF VII :AC. You do know that if they didn't they would be shunned for the rest of the company's life span right? ;-)

I'm hoping for a next-gen Parasite Eve version at some point. I loved the sequel on PS1. Linear... but fun as hell. Fable was also a highlight for me. Short but sweet, with many familiar elements from other RPGs all bundled into one nice package. My favorite gameworld though has always been the Dark Sun ("Athas") world from AD&D. Of course, those ancient goldbox games for the PC didn't do it justice... I doubt i'll ever see a revival either. 8-(

I beg to differ:
Final Fantasy VIII = Not great but playable enough
Final Fantasy IX = Mega cute and fun, with great side-quests and the best ending of any game ever
Final Fantasy X = OK. Tidus was a complete pain in the arse but Auron was sexy, until I found out he was dead.
Final Fantasy XI = Dunno - don't play online.
Final Fantasy XII = It'll be mint.

What about FFX2? I say - girly, fun and cheesy, but Rikku wants a bullet.

Parasite Eve 2 was the second game I ever played on the PS (after Silent Hill), and it was my favourite game for ages. But I never could beat the final boss. How about you?
 
I've liked all the Final Fantasies up until X, from which thereafter I never got a chance to play. Each have their own qualities. Except Final Fantasy 1. I see no thrill in generic characters.

I'm replaying FFTadvance now. It's way beneath the standard set by the original FFT, but all this talk about FFT made me want to play that anyway
 

Oh I but I beg to differ too.

Final Fatnasy I - Never played it, but old shcool so I will probably love it.

Final Fatnasy II - Never played it, but old school so I will probably love it.

Final Fatnasy Mystical Quest - I want that two hours of my life that it took to beat that game back. WORST FINAL FANTASY EVER.

Final Fantasy III - The same as FF VI here in the states so I love it.

Final Fantasy IV - Never played it, but old school so I will probably love it.

Final Final V - Never played it, but old school so I will probably love it.

Final Fatnasy VI - The game that got me into the series. Best old school FF game to date. Shadow was the coolest.

Final Fantasy VII - Best FF game ever. If you do not get the point of the story, then you should not be playing the game to begin with. Only open-minded and understanding people apply. ;-)

Final Fantasy VIII - Worst FF game next to FF: Mystical Quest. No plot, no indepth characters, and no difficulty. Translation = No fun = Shite

Final Fantasy Tactics - Old school, very old school.....I like it.

Final Fantasy IX - After five minutes with ViVi I wanted to commit suicide. Seriously I am not joking here, and I wish I was when I said that. I have never picked it back up since then.

Final Fatnasy X - A complex story that confuses people like The Matrix, but if you are a nerd like me you understand it really quickly and discover that it is shallow, meaningless, and pretty much a total gimmick in the end.

Final Fantasy X-2 - Gratuitous eye candy and sex appeal. 'Nuff said.

Final Fantasy XI - This game makes me want to play Everquest and WoW more than anything. God this game is horrible.

So unless you are a total fanboy or a bloody prat for Final Fantasy (J/K;-)), most of the games are hits and misses when it comes to quality verus the quanity of the series. However, Squre did make some other great games:

Rad Racer
Rad Racer II
Brave Fencer Musashi
Parasite Eve
Parasite Eve
Star Ocean: Till The End of Time
And a few others I cannot list off the top of my head at this time.

So when it comes down to the most whored out and and disappointing gaming series for Square, Final Fantasy is in the forefront of that list.

I for one, think that the Shining series are the best of all RPGs, though I am always tempted by the Phantasy Star series also.

Lately I've been playing FFX and I love it. Eh... I got addicted to it...partly because it's part of my beloved series.

Well I just played Vandal Hearts II for about two months, got six dungeons from the end and the damned disk corrupted and won't let me in any dungeons! I'll have to find a walkthrough to find out what happens at the end.

So I started playing Star Ocean 2.

Out of curiosity, what characters do you have so far? I know some people have missed Ashton Anchors, which is too bad 'cuz he's my favorite character

I think, but am not sure, that you can make the battles less action-y. Maybe check the Custom/Options/Config menu?

Hint: Come on Bunny is a Super Specialty Skill, and it requires 2 Specialty Skills (and no, one of them isn't cooking ;-) ). You might be able to get it fairly early, but I don't remember.
 
Last RPG I played was Final fantasy X, and I liked it alot. My favorite RPG must be Breath of fire. Dont have time to play alot of games these days, since they are very time-consuming.
Noticed a few of you answered Zelda, as your favorite game, But that isn´t RPG is it? ( havent played them all so i wouldnt know)
 
I consider Zelda an action RPG, much in the veins of Terranigma, The Illusion of Gaia, Secret of Mana, etc. There's a lot of blurry edges over the definition of an RPG, but I think the common concensus is that it's some form of RPG.

Breath of Fire was actually my first RPG. Still has a warm place in that convex fleshy matter sometimes refer to as my chest, which may or may not have a heart.

I am only near the beginning - I have Rena, Claude, Celine and Dias. I am in the forest about to rescue the children.

I loved Breath of Fire (4?). It was great fun trying to get the combos. The best I got was 40-odd, which I was chuffed with.

True. I think there are three main types: Turn-based (Final Fantasy, Breath of Fire, Suikoden), Action (Zelda, .hack, Star Ocean) and Tactical (FF Tactics, Vandal Hearts). Even then there is overlap - Arc the Lad is turn-based, but it has tactical elements. And tactical is turn-based anyway. Games from other genres can have RPG elements - like the customisable weapons in Parasite Eve. The wiki article on RPGs is quite interesting: seems like character stats, narrative structure, bestiaries, maps, character development and combat are all essential elements.

It has a heart. Anyone who likes RPGs has a heart!
 
My favorite would have to be FFVII.
The graphics were revolutionary at the time.The story was immense.The characters had emotions.The stuff added to the battle system was wonderful(example:materia).I'm even replaying it as we speak.I even heard that they're making a better version on ps3,but we'll see how that ends...and then there's always advent children coming out.
 
If I had to choose the best one I've ever played at the time I played it, I would have to go with the Pokemon seiries, it was the first videogame I've ever played, and I still hold fond memories of staying up 'til 9:30 p.m. just to catch that ol' Clefairy or Mewtwo.

But if I'm going with the best RPG I've ever played, the trophy would go halfway to the Final Fantasy series, and halfway to the Zelda series. Both game series were revolutionary in their own right, Zelda brought captivating storylines, gameplay that led up to a major plot, and the ever famous mad chickens. Final Fantasy brought on completely new levels of gameplay that redefined the RPG world.
 
Final fantasy is probably my favourite game series of all time, so it comes as no shock I voted for it.

Can't wait till FF12 is out
