what does it means`work horses and show ponies`

Interesting phrase, not used too often now.

Lets say you are talking about people you work with. Some people work very hard and accomplish a lot of good work. they are the work horses. Some people rush around and look very busy , but get very little real work done. They look like a good worker , but really are just show ponies. Maybe someone can give a better example then mine.

I think I got what you meant. Here in Japan, we have similar expression.
We say working really hard as work like horses. We don't have expression for the show ponies part though.
